Okayama University Launches Innovative Remote Healthcare for Painless Childbirth

In a pioneering initiative, Okayama University, in collaboration with Miyake Hospital and Wemex, has embarked on a joint research project aimed at addressing the challenges associated with painless childbirth in Japan. Scheduled to commence on July 6, 2025, this innovative study will tackle crucial issues, particularly the shortage of trained anesthesiologists and safety management during epidural anesthesia procedures.

Painless childbirth, specifically the administration of epidural anesthesia, necessitates the presence and active management of an anesthesiologist. However, with a significant national shortage of these professionals, the availability of painless childbirth options has been limited across many healthcare facilities. This project aims to utilize remote medical technology to enhance accessibility and ensure safety in these procedures.

The research proposes that when a pregnant patient opts for a painless delivery at Miyake Hospital, anesthesiologists from Okayama University Hospital will perform the epidural anesthesia on-site. After confirming the stability of the epidural and the patient's condition, the anesthesiologist will return to their regular duties at the university, while utilizing the remote healthcare system provided by Wemex, called Teladoc HEALTH. This system will allow them to monitor and consult with the patient remotely throughout the delivery process.

During the labor, the anesthesiologist will conduct regular assessments of pain management, respiratory function, circulation, and any potential complications arising from the epidural anesthesia. Should any critical issues arise that require physical intervention, the anesthesiologist can swiftly return to Miyake Hospital to provide immediate care.

The primary goal of this research project is to evaluate patient satisfaction with the remote healthcare approach; however, there are plans to further extend this research to include assessments of overall safety in painless childbirth procedures as well. Kentaro Kanazawa, a lecturer at Okayama University, emphasized the significant role of anesthesiologists in ensuring the safety of painless childbirth practices. He noted the critical need for solutions to the staff shortages that currently restrict access for all patients who desire such services.

By incorporating remote medical care, the aim is to allow more facilities to safely offer painless childbirth, thereby enabling women to have a reassuring birthing experience in their familiar local environments. Given Japan's history of reported fatalities associated with painful childbirth methods, establishing a robust management system that includes expert oversight by anesthesiologists is vital.

This collaboration is a response to growing public demand for safer childbirth options, aligning with Okayama University’s commitment to advancing healthcare technology and enhancing community health outcomes.
