Saza Coffee Triumphs in Two Major Japanese Coffee Championships 2025

Saza Coffee Dominates the Japanese Coffee Scene

In a remarkable feat, Saza Coffee, based in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, has emerged victorious in two of Japan's most prestigious coffee competitions: the Japan Barista Championship (JBC) and the Japan Brewers Cup (JBrC), both held in 2025. This achievement marks the first time in history that a single company has won both championships in the same year, highlighting the true capability and expertise of its baristas, Keisuke Honma and Wataru Iida. They utilized the exquisite Panama Geisha coffee beans, known for their exceptional flavor and aroma.

The Championships

The JBC, focused on the skillful preparation of espresso-based beverages using high-pressure coffee machines, saw Keisuke Honma take home the top prize. His performance involved impressively presenting three different coffee styles to four judges, who evaluated his creations based on flavor, aroma, and overall presentation.

On the other hand, Wataru Iida triumphed at the JBrC, which assesses competitors based on their ability to brew coffee, including filter and siphon methods. This competition examines the quality of coffee made, relying on thorough evaluation by three judges who sample the coffee presented. Iida's win not only reflects his deep understanding of coffee extraction but also his ability to deliver outstanding taste to a diverse audience.

The Panama Geisha

The star of both competitions was the Panama Geisha coffee, which has gained worldwide acclaim for its unique flavor profile. Its characteristics include floral notes reminiscent of jasmine, sweet peach undertones, and hints of bergamot, making it a particularly sought-after coffee variety. Saza Coffee has been actively participating in the auction of Esmeralda Farm's Geisha coffee since 2009, making it a staple in high-end coffee events.

In recognition of their victories, Saza Coffee will host the "Geisha Festival" from October 3 to 5, featuring promotions and events centered around the celebrated Panama Geisha coffee at various locations including the Saza Coffee main store in Hitachinaka, Tsukuba University Store in Tsukuba, and the KITTE Marunouchi store in Tokyo.

Training and Preparation

Leading up to these competitions, both Honma and Iida underwent rigorous training and preparation to master their craft. The JBC required Honma to showcase three types of espresso machines in his performances, including classic espresso drinks, milk beverages that showcase the harmony of coffee and milk, and a signature drink that pairs espresso with unique ingredients. On the other hand, Iida tackled two types of brewing assessments, accurately demonstrating his skills in preparing filter coffee under competitive conditions.

These two championships not only serve as a crowning achievement for both baristas but also signify a pivotal moment for Saza Coffee as it prepares to represent Japan at the global level. Honma will compete at the World Barista Championship (WBC) 2026 in Panama, while Iida prepares for the World Brewers Cup (WBrC) 2026 in Brussels, Belgium.

Congratulations to Keisuke Honma and Wataru Iida for their remarkable success and dedication to the art of coffee making. The passion and expertise displayed by Saza Coffee have set a new benchmark in the industry, and we eagerly anticipate their future contributions to the world of coffee.
