Sheldon S. Lin, MD, Elected AOFAS® President

On September 15, 2025, Dr. Sheldon S. Lin, an esteemed foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon, was officially installed as the President of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). Recognized as a leading organization for the surgical and non-operative management of foot and ankle conditions, AOFAS boasts a vibrant community of over 2,500 members. Dr. Lin, who practices at the Rutgers North Jersey Orthopaedic Institute, is committed to making significant strides in the field during his tenure, particularly focusing on engaging the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr. Lin emphasized the need for innovative programs designed to attract orthopaedic residents and medical students to the specialty of foot and ankle surgery. “We must continue to develop programs that engage orthopaedic residents and medical students early in their careers,” he stated. By offering research support, mentorship, and guidance on grant writing, Dr. Lin aims to foster an environment that promotes interest in foot and ankle fellowships.

The rigorous educational pathway for foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons includes four years of medical school, followed by five years of residency training, and a fellowship year dedicated to specialized surgical practices. Dr. Lin’s leadership will undeniably influence the quality of education and mentoring available to aspiring orthopaedic surgeons.

In addition to focusing on educational initiatives, Dr. Lin has set forth ambitious goals for enhancing collaborative efforts with international organizations such as the European Foot & Ankle Society (EFAS). By strengthening these partnerships, he plans to promote the global exchange of knowledge and innovative practices in foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Lin's commitment extends beyond educational pursuits. One of his key objectives is to create avenues for AOFAS members to engage in impactful research opportunities, including grants and interdisciplinary collaborations. These efforts are intended not only to advance the field but also to improve overall patient care outcomes.

Having earned his MD from Jefferson Medical College, now recognized as Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Lin completed his residency there followed by a foot and ankle fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Over the years, he has acknowledged the significant contributions of various mentors and colleagues who have shaped his career, recognizing the profound impact of community and mentorship in medicine.

For nearly two decades, Dr. Lin has actively supported the mission of AOFAS. His extensive background includes serving on the AOFAS Board of Directors in key roles, including President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, and as a member-at-large. He was also the program chair for the Annual Meeting in 2018 and has taken on roles in mentoring and reviewing scholarly work within the organization.

Reflecting on his presidency, Dr. Lin asserted, “The future of AOFAS lies in its members—especially in the future of the next generation of surgeons and researchers.” His vision includes exploring new pathways, concepts, and techniques that will elevate the standards of care in foot and ankle surgery globally.
