Ikki Okazaki Launches LEGENZ: A New Baseball Training Program
Former head coach of the Yomiuri Giants, Ikki Okazaki, is taking a significant step forward in nurturing the next generation of baseball talent. Starting July 2025, he will kick off the LEGENZ program, a personalized coaching service designed specifically for elementary and middle school students. As part of this initiative, Okazaki will mentor a select group of just ten youngsters, aiming to bring their dreams to fruition and provide them with unparalleled training experiences.
The LEGENZ program is a fusion of Okazaki’s extensive professional baseball experience and a blend of developmental techniques drawn from both Japan and the United States. His approach focuses on maximizing each player's strengths through what he calls “hybrid coaching.” This strategy includes weekly coaching sessions in Tokyo as well as individualized feedback based on video analysis of their performances in team matches and self-practice.
Every Friday, students will gather at a specialized practice facility in Tokyo for regular training sessions. Not only will these lessons instill essential skills and techniques, but they will also provide an environment focused on long-term development, with the potential for moving to professional or major league levels in mind.
The Unique Coaching Philosophy of Ikki Okazaki
What sets Okazaki's coaching apart is his ability to simplify complex theories into accessible and practical instruction. As students undergo training, observers often remark on the swift evolution of their batting techniques and swings. This transformation is a testament to Okazaki’s ability to connect with young athletes.
With a history marked by success, including multiple All-Star selections during his playing days and accolades such as the Japan Series Outstanding Player Award and Gold Glove awards, Okazaki has a wealth of experience. His post-retirement coaching journey has included time with the New York Yankees, where he expanded his knowledge of baseball coaching, which he now brings back to his native country with a fresh perspective.
Tailored Guidance for Each Player
The LEGENZ program emphasizes individualized instruction that adjusts according to each player’s unique attributes. From batting to fielding, daily practice routines, and setting achievable goals, Okazaki’s training aligns with each student’s personality and talents. Whether a player dreams of being a regular starter, advancing to a competitive school, or aspiring to become a professional or major leaguer, Okazaki stands ready to guide them toward their aspirations.
This program delivers the high-caliber coaching previously available only to Giants’ training players, now accessible to young talents in their
