Rui Costa Joins StrongMind as CTO to Drive AI Integration in Education

StrongMind Appoints Rui Costa as Chief Technology Officer

CHANDLER, Ariz., August 11, 2026 – In a significant move for the education technology sector, StrongMind has announced the appointment of Rui Costa as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). With an impressive background in engineering at industry giants like Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Epic Games, Costa is set to lead the company's push toward an AI-native platform strategy. This pivotal role brings an expectation to unify StrongMind's diverse range of products on a single platform, fundamentally transforming how educational software is developed and delivered.

A Vision for AI-Driven Education

As the appointed CTO, Rui Costa aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) not merely as an enhancement but as a core element of StrongMind’s overall strategy. Currently, the company is known for its digital curriculum and learning technology designed for K–12 students. Costa's leadership will address the challenge of developing an integrated platform where every product is seamlessly built and secured. The concept of an “AI-native” approach refers to the incorporation of AI capabilities as foundational elements rather than being add-ons to existing features. This strategy is anticipated to revolutionize the educational landscape, making sophisticated educational tools more accessible and efficient for educators and learners alike.

Damian Creamer, Founder and CEO of StrongMind, expressed high hopes for Costa's impact stating, "He combines deep, hands-on engineering experience with the ability to translate complex technical advancements into actionable decisions for the entire business. His vision will help position StrongMind uniquely within the education sector."

A Robust Technology Background

Rui Costa comes to StrongMind equipped with over a decade of experience in building scalable AI and machine learning systems. During his tenure at Google as a Senior Software and Machine Learning Engineer, he played a significant role in the development of the Google Speech Analysis Framework, a vital technology for Google Cloud’s various services. His work included constructing tools that enhanced natural language processing, speech recognition, and image processing functionalities, and he even holds a patent for secure sharing of machine learning models.

Notably, at AWS, Costa made strides in using generative AI to improve manufacturing efficiencies, aiding in the development of success stories including a collaboration with Volkswagen on their production line enhancements. His ability to marry compliance and innovative technology promises to be beneficial in the heavily regulated educational environment.

At Epic Games, he was integral in developing tools for the Epic Games Store, showcasing his capability to manage large-scale technological solutions, particularly where user experience and backend efficiency must align.

Transforming StrongMind's Approach

Since joining StrongMind, Costa has taken significant strides in laying down the foundational architecture that will support all future products. He has implemented crucial standards for identity, runtime, API, and security technologies, with nearly all essential areas catered for within a span of just three months. Some of the highlights of his early initiatives include:

  • - Launching Production Services: Under his guidance, the company successfully launched its first production service on a new Kubernetes platform, showcasing enhanced performance and security features.
  • - API Standardization: The development of a new API platform has replaced older systems while ensuring zero downtime during transitions.
  • - Identity Migration: Costa has set in motion a migration for identity management across over 150 client applications and nearly 300,000 accounts, focusing on streamlined operations and security.
  • - Unified Engineering Stack: Standardizing the technology stack with Go, React, and Protobuf has facilitated collaboration among engineering teams.

Costa articulated his vision, saying, "Our goal is clear: ensure that every product shipped is built on the same platform, with unified deployment and authentication processes. We must leverage AI as the core of our engineering practices and deliver on our unique promise of grounded, accredited curriculum that serves real teachers and students."

Future Initiatives

Looking forward, Costa aims to enhance operational efficacy by retiring outdated systems and establishing a dedicated reliability engineering function that ensures all communication pathways for students and families are monitored effectively. Key projects slated for the upcoming year include:

  • - Completing the comprehensive identity platform migration.
  • - Integrating all StrongMind products into a unified platform.
  • - Launching StrongMind's advanced Communication Hub, ensuring reliability standards that enhance user experiences.
