The Exciting Launch of the RYUKYU e SPORTS & ECO GRAND PRIX 2026
On August 29, 2026, the Hotel Collective in Naha, Okinawa, was the venue for an exceptional event: the "RYUKYU e SPORTS & ECO GRAND PRIX 2026". The championship brought together a total of
20 teams, comprising
60 participants, all eager to tackle the pressing issue of oceanic waste through a competitive yet fun format combining gaming and community service.
The Concept of eスポGOMI
The concept behind eスポGOMI uniquely combines
esports with environmental action, turning traditional waste collection into a spirited contest. Teams of three raced against the clock to collect trash, earning points based on the weight and type of waste gathered. The event encourages participation across all ages, from children to adults, promoting an engaging avenue for community cleanup.
This environmental initiative is part of the broader
RYUKYU e SPORTS & ECO GRAND PRIX 2026 project, which integrates esports with the region's celebrated tourism. Launched in
2022, this year's event marks the fifth iteration, continuing to increase awareness of ecological concerns while making it entertaining and interactive.
Event Highlights
The competition was fierce as teams hustled within the designated area around the Hotel Collective. The standout team,
Kadena Pony Irei, triumphed with a staggering
13.905 kg of trash collected, securing
2,349 points. They particularly excelled in collecting high-point items like bottles and cans, outperforming the runner-up, Kadena Pony Shosei, by a notable
764.5 points.
Ultimately, the total garbage collected across all teams was
62.602 kg, yielding a collective point tally of
10,024.2 points. Team efforts revealed a diversity of waste collected:
27.935 kg of combustible waste,
17.7 kg of bottles and cans,
10.3 kg of non-combustible trash,
5.8 kg of PET bottles, and
0.85 kg of cigarette butts. This event not only served to highlight regional pollution issues but also fostered community bonding and shared responsibility.
A Game to Remember
One of the event's highlights was the halftime
gaming tournament, featuring
Puyo Puyo e Sports, where participants ranging from
2 to 49 years old showcased their skills, creating lively competition. The tournament not only provided entertainment but also granted successful teams advantages for the trash collection segment. This risk-and-reward format added a unique twist to the eスポGOMI approach, enhancing the excitement.
