Tamiya Home Inaugurates SOGI Training Workshop
On October 7, 2025, Tamiya Home Co., Ltd., based in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, launched its very first SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) training session, aligned with its core value of "Sportsmanship"—a principle that encourages recognizing individual uniqueness and supporting those in need. This timely workshop took place ahead of the International Coming Out Day on October 11.
The initiative was supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's project promoting LGBTQ+ training and consultations, with Azusa Nishimoto, a director from the Japan LGBTQ+ Legal Alliance, as the invited speaker. A total of 43 employees participated in-person at Tamiya Home's Tokyo office, while three joined remotely.
Objectives of the Training
The primary goal of the training was to foster a cultural shift among employees toward greater inclusivity and respect for diverse identities. As part of this commitment, Tamiya Home aims to cultivate a working environment where all employees can express themselves freely without the fear of discrimination.
This workshop also serves to enhance the ability of employees to engage effectively with a diverse customer base, reflecting the company’s belief that an inclusive culture is essential for the company's growth and community engagement.
Workshop Details
- - Date and Time: October 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (2 hours)
- - Location: Tamiya Home Tokyo Office, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo
- - Participants: 43 employees from various departments, including 3 remote attendees
- - Speaker: Azusa Nishimoto, Japan LGBTQ+ Legal Alliance
The agenda included discussions on the basics of LGBTQ/SOGI, insights into SOGI-related harassment—including appropriate language use—and practical group exercises focused on what Tamiya Home can implement to create a more inclusive environment.
During the workshop, participants split into groups of 5-6 to brainstorm actionable initiatives. A recurring theme was the desire for open communication, with employees emphasizing the importance of fostering relationships where everyone feels comfortable sharing their identities, not just LGBTQ+ individuals.
Measuring Awareness Shift
Before the workshop, participants were surveyed about their knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues, and a follow-up questionnaire was conducted afterward to assess any shifts in awareness. The results were striking:
1.
Knowledge Self-Assessment: Prior to the workshop, only 30% felt knowledgeable about SOGI issues. Post-session, this increased to 90%.
2.
Contributions to a Friendly Workplace: Initially, 60% felt they could not contribute to creating an LGBTQ+ friendly environment; this dropped to merely 30% after the training.
3.
Interest in Future Training: Interest in participating in further SOGI-related workshops surged from 30% to 62% after the session.
Participant Reflections
Feedback from attendees highlighted significant learnings and reflections:
- - Many expressed concern that Japan lags behind in legal protections and societal understanding of LGBTQ+ matters, underscoring the need for supportive environments.
- - Participants noted an increase in optimism regarding societal changes as businesses like Tamiya Home prioritize these conversations.
- - A common takeaway was the instructor's vision for a workplace where individuals do not need to explicitly declare their identity to feel comfortable.
Looking Ahead
Tamiya Home recognizes this training as just the beginning of its D&I (Diversity & Inclusion) initiatives. Continued efforts will be made to share this knowledge not only with employees but also with partner companies and contractors, fostering a broader commitment to inclusivity in the industry.
This workshop signifies Tamiya Home's dedication to cultivating a work culture that maximizes the potential of all its employees, guided by the principle of "Sportsmanship." For more details on this training, reports, and ongoing D&I efforts, please visit the Tamiya Home official note account.
