Coal India Limited and AM Green Forge Major Renewable Energy Supply Agreement in India
Major Renewable Energy Supply Agreement in India
In a landmark move towards a sustainable energy future, Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have signed a memorandum of understanding that marks the beginning of one of the world's largest renewable energy contracts. This collaboration seeks to supply an astonishing 4500 MW of carbon-free energy through a blend of solar and wind energy, confirming both companies’ commitment to India’s transition to a cleaner energy landscape.
A Step Towards Green Energy
The formal agreement, which is non-binding but significant nonetheless, was inked on May 7, 2025, signaling a proactive approach to achieving India's national goals of a cleaner energy mix and net-zero emissions. CIL aims to deliver the renewable energy in phases, aligning with AM Green’s ambitious plan to establish new green ammonia facilities across the country.
The project, estimated at a total capital outlay of about Rs. 25,000 Crores, will include solar power installations with a capacity ranging from 2500 MW to 3000 MW, and wind energy contributing an additional 1500 MW to 2000 MW. Proposed locations for the wind projects are in India's southern states, while an exploration for solar plants will focus on regions known for abundant sunlight, such as Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Integration with Energy Storage
To ensure a consistent supply of renewable energy, AM Green plans to integrate the solar and wind resources supplied by CIL with pumped hydro storage systems. This innovative method is aimed at providing a stable and reliable flow of green energy, vital for the operations of AM Green's upcoming facilities.
P M Prasad, Chairman of CIL, emphasized the importance of the agreement, remarking, “While coal remains our mainstay in meeting India's expanding energy needs in the near term, our plans include a proactive role in building a greener and more sustainable future. This is in consonance with our commitment to becoming the country's integrated energy provider.”
AM Green's Vision for Sustainable Fuels
Founded by the visionaries behind Greenko, one of India's leading energy transition solution providers, AM Green is on a mission to produce 5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This production goal aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and constitutes roughly 20% of the national target for green hydrogen production.
Anil Chalamalasetty, founder of AM Green and the Greenko Group, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership: “We are delighted to partner with CIL on what will become one of the world’s largest carbon-free, renewable energy supply contracts. Our aim is to be one of the most cost-competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green commodities worldwide.”
Collaborating for the Future
The agreement was signed by Sudarsan Bora, General Manager at CIL, and Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior Vice President of Business Development at AM Green, with other key personnel from both companies present at the occasion. In their quest for long-term collaboration, both CIL and AM Green are positioned to significantly contribute to India's renewable energy ambitions, offering a model of how traditional energy sectors can transition toward sustainability.
AM Green, with a strong commitment to green technologies, is not just producing renewable energy; it's also paving the way for innovations in Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Green Ammonia, and other eco-friendly products, thus propelling India into a leadership role on the global decarbonization stage.
As these companies spearhead significant renewable projects, they contribute to the larger goal of achieving a sustainable, green future for India, illustrating that responsible energy production and environmental conservation can go hand in hand.
