Challenges HR Professionals Face with Misleading Candidate Information in Hiring
Overview of the HR Challenges
In a recent report by Equifax®, published after their HR Trends Survey at the SHRM 2026 Annual Conference, startling statistics emerged showing that a significant proportion of HR professionals grapple with issues surrounding fabricated and misleading candidate information. With insights gathered from over 350 HR executives, the survey highlights the evolving landscape of hiring practices, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence (AI).
The Surge in Misleading Information
According to the findings, around 73% of HR professionals reported facing challenges due to embellished candidate claims. Specifically, half of those surveyed pointed to difficulties in verifying employment histories provided by candidates. As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, the implications of this trend are substantial, requiring vigilant scrutiny from hiring managers to ensure legitimacy in applications.

This duality illustrates the necessity for HR professionals to strike a balance between leveraging AI's capabilities and maintaining human judgment and transparency in their recruitment strategies.
Enhancing Employee Experience
Employee experience has emerged as a top priority for HR leaders. This year, 63% of those surveyed indicated that improving employee experience is their primary workforce management challenge. This marks a significant increase compared to the previous survey, suggesting a strategic shift towards valuing employee engagement and retention rather than merely focusing on attraction. AI plays a pivotal role here, as it alleviates administrative burdens, allowing HR teams to concentrate on enhancing employee relations and workforce development.
Confidence in Verification Efforts
As organizations strive to mitigate the risks associated with misleading information, a notable portion of HR professionals—69%—expressed confidence in their ability to spot inaccuracies in candidate information, a slight increase from 63% in the previous survey. However, only 24% rated their confidence as
