Movil Theater's 37-Year Legacy Comes to a Close
After 37 memorable years, the Movil theater, located within the Sōtetsu Movil building in Yokohama, Kanagawa, is set to close its doors permanently on September 30, 2026. Operated by Tokyu Recreation Co., Ltd., the closing will be marked with a special farewell ceremony following the final screening of the beloved film, "New Cinema Paradiso," which is scheduled for that day.
Farewell Ceremony Details
The ceremony will take place at 6:30 PM, right after the last show of "New Cinema Paradiso," which starts at 4:00 PM. The event will feature a video message from Makoto Sato, President of Sōtetsu Urban Creates and Sōtetsu Building Management. Moviegoers will be treated to a unique performance called "Sand Art Depicting MOVIL," where artists will create scenes symbolizing the theater's rich history using sand. Attendees can also look forward to a slideshow of photos from the theater’s past alongside touching messages from its loyal patrons.
As a token of appreciation, attendees will receive commemorative gifts, including a mini towel featuring the "RE:MOVIL" logo and a unique fragrance card, which will encompass cherished memories and information from the theater, distilled into an aromatic experience via AI analysis. However, these gifts will only be available to those who attend the farewell event.
