Innovative Actuators for Humanoid Robots: A Leap in Robotics Technology

Pioneering Robotics Actuators for Humanoid Robots

In a bid to contribute to the advancement of humanoid robots—a sector projected to grow significantly—NSK Ltd. has developed revolutionary rotary and linear actuators designed specifically for robotic applications. These actuators boast compact size, lightweight construction, and high back drivability, facilitating smoother and more graceful movements essential for humanoid robots.

With the integration of NSK’s expertise in bearings and linear motion products along with mechatronics technology, the new actuators demonstrate the company's commitment to innovation and efficiency in robotics. Scheduled for exhibition at the International Robot Exhibition in December 2025, these cutting-edge products are set for market release in 2028.

Background of Development

In recent years, humanoid robots have gained traction as a solution to societal challenges such as labor shortages and aging populations. Their potential application ranges from manufacturing and logistics to healthcare and service sectors. Recognizing this trend, NSK has previously established a solid track record in the industrial robotics field, predominantly through its bearings and linear motion products. Building on this foundation, the company is now directing its R&D efforts toward establishing a strong presence in the humanoid robotics arena, where demand for high-performance and reliable actuators is surging.

Humanoid robots require actuators that meet a unique set of requirements, including high precision and reliability typical in industrial robotics, along with the essential characteristics of being compact, lightweight, and offering excellent back drivability.

Features of the New Actuators

NSK plans to expand its offerings in rotary actuators for joints and linear actuators for limbs in the humanoid robot lineup. Collaborating closely with Delta Electronics, the actuators incorporate a mechatronic integrated structure with built-in drivers, achieving compactness while enhancing accessibility for wiring and fluid lines.

  • - Rotary Actuator:
- Compact and lightweight design (Torque-to-weight ratio of approximately 110 Nm/kg).
- A hollow structure that increases wiring and piping flexibility.
- Improved back drivability through load torque estimation.

  • - Linear Actuator:
- Utilizes ball screws to achieve high back drivability.
- Features a high-density, high-thermal layout for compactness (Maximum thrust-to-weight ratio of approximately 4300 N/kg).

Advantages of the New Products

The newly developed actuators effectively contribute to the realization of the “graceful movement” expected from humanoid robots through various benefits:

1. Increased Design Flexibility:
The lightweight and compact design offers flexibility in robot joint and structural design, enabling closer replication of human shapes and movements.

2. Energy Efficiency and Extended Operation:
With the application of NSK’s bearings and ball screws, these actuators deliver high efficiency, contributing to reduced overall robot weight and extended battery-powered operation times. The decreased material usage during manufacturing, combined with lower energy consumption throughout the product's lifecycle, further aids in reducing CO₂ emissions.

3. Enhanced Safety and Flexibility:
High back drivability allows for a gentle response to external forces, enhancing safety during operations that involve collaboration and contact with humans.

4. Integration of Smart Technologies:
By partnering with Delta Electronics, the actuators support high-speed communications (EtherCAT®) and software controls, positioning the robots for advanced smart and remote control functionalities.

Future Prospects

The upcoming actuators will be showcased at the International Robot Exhibition 2025, providing a platform for matching customer needs through real-world demonstrations. In preparation for the market launch in 2028, NSK plans to collaborate on joint validation with clients and provide samples for evaluative purposes. Additionally, NSK is committed to expanding its lineup of bearings and ball screws used in the actuators, further solidifying its footprint in the robotics industry.

NSK is determined to expand its global operations in robotics, aiming to establish this field as a cornerstone of its business by 2036.
