Quantum Mesh Acquires Patent for Innovative Liquid Immersion Cooling System 'KAMUI'

Quantum Mesh Patents Revolutionary Liquid Immersion Cooling System 'KAMUI'

Quantum Mesh, headquartered in the Chuo Ward of Tokyo and led by CEO Hiroyuki Shinohara, has successfully obtained a comprehensive patent (Patent Application No. 2025-036914) for its cutting-edge liquid immersion cooling system named 'KAMUI'. This advanced technology encompasses multiple elements, including heat exchange structures, oil flow designs, and rack configurations that enable high-efficiency liquid immersion cooling.

Background of KAMUI Development

Since the release of ChatGPT 3.5 in 2023, the adoption of generative AI technology has witnessed exponential growth, now serving approximately one billion users weekly. However, this surge in AI processing demands has exacerbated the power consumption of GPUs, leading to challenges in cooling them effectively using traditional air-cooling data centers. While water cooling systems have gained traction, the increasing heat output from GPUs has revealed limitations in cooling capacity and energy efficiency.

In this context, liquid immersion cooling has emerged as one of the most promising next-generation technologies. By submerging servers in non-conductive oil, this method effectively manages and cools the rising temperatures, vastly improving energy efficiency in high-density GPU environments. Quantum Mesh is committed to supporting the burgeoning AI society by pioneering the KAMUI liquid immersion cooling system and creating efficient cooling solutions for modern digital infrastructure.

Features of the KAMUI Cooling System

KAMUI, set to begin development and operation in 2024 and commercialized in 2025, is a unique closed-loop single-phase immersion cooling system. Its primary features are as follows:

  • - Utilization of Abundant Groundwater: KAMUI harnesses the stable temperature range of groundwater, which is typically around 14-18ºC throughout the year, providing an efficient heat exchange and enabling sustainable data center operations with minimal environmental impact. Additionally, for areas where groundwater access is limited, this system can adapt to incorporate chiller cooling methods utilizing a specific volume of water, ensuring deployment flexibility.

  • - Industry-Leading Energy Efficiency (PUE 1.03-1.04): Employing liquid immersion cooling reduces the required cooling power to less than one-tenth of traditional air conditioning methods. The entire data center achieves an exemplary PUE efficiency of between 1.03 and 1.04, representing one of the best performance levels globally.

  • - Compact Footprint with High Cooling Capacity: Designed with the proliferation of high-density GPU servers in mind, KAMUI can cool systems up to 40 kVA within a footprint of less than one square meter. This design achieves an approximately 80% reduction in space requirements compared to conventional data centers, enabling high-performance facilities even in constrained urban or rural settings.

Insights on KAMUI

KAMUI is Quantum Mesh's proprietary closed-loop single-phase liquid immersion cooling system. This innovative design submerges servers in a cooling liquid, efficiently absorbing the heat generated by the server itself. The system employs groundwater, which maintains a stable temperature range of 14-18ºC, to facilitate effective heat exchange. As a result, the energy required for cooling is reduced to less than one-tenth when compared to traditional air cooling techniques. The data center overall achieves an industry-leading efficiency with a PUE between 1.03 and 1.04.

The cooling capabilities of KAMUI are impressive, with a capacity to handle 40 kVA in a compact rack area of approximately 1 m², contributing to an 80% reduction in space efficiency compared to standard data center solutions.
