Innovative Partnership Between LIPLID and One Planet Café to Use Banana Fibre for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable innovation, LIPLID AB, a Swedish company specializing in plastic-free, plant-based packaging, has announced a strategic partnership with One Planet Café Ltd., a Japanese firm renowned for its Fair Trade banana fibre supply chain in Zambia. This partnership aims to explore the utilization of banana fibres in developing next-generation, eco-friendly packaging products.

LIPLID, based in Stockholm and led by CEO Jesper Berthold, brings a wealth of experience in creating renewable packaging alternatives to fossil-fuel based materials. One Planet Café, headquartered in Tokyo and co-founded by Peo Ekberg, has established a robust Fair Trade banana fibre value chain which not only ensures ethical sourcing but also transforms agricultural waste into a valuable material. Traditionally, banana stems, a byproduct of banana production often discarded or incinerated, present a compelling opportunity to minimize agricultural waste while simultaneously generating economic and environmental benefits for local communities.

The mission of One Planet Café extends beyond commercial interests—it aims to provide measurable social and environmental impacts in Zambia. By supporting local farmers and advocating for sustainable practices, the company's Fair Trade model seeks to alleviate poverty and protect wildlife habitats. LIPLID has expressed its commitment to aligning its sustainability goals with this impactful initiative, looking for ways to enrich and expand the positive effects of their collaboration.

"This collaboration is about more than just the development of a new material; it’s about demonstrating how circular economy practices can harmonize with commercial scalability," said Jesper Berthold, highlighting the transformative potential of this partnership. He believes that the packaging industry can prioritize responsible sourcing without compromising product performance.

Echoing these sentiments, Peo Ekberg stated, "Our Fair Trade value chain aims to create long-term value and address pressing social issues, while also protecting endangered species like elephants. Partnering with LIPLID provides us with the opportunity to channel this value into an innovative product category, ensuring we stay true to our roots and the communities we serve."

In the coming months, LIPLID and One Planet Café will collaborate to assess the technical feasibility of integrating banana fibres into LIPLID's various product offerings. They plan to develop prototype models and investigate potential funding avenues to support ongoing research and development efforts, with external partners such as Norway’s FibreFlow AS also being considered for future collaboration.

One Planet Café has previously partnered with several Japanese universities and companies to enhance the use of banana fibres in bioplastics and packaging applications, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable practices. LIPLID marks the first Scandinavian entity to enter this partnership, representing a significant milestone for both companies.

Currently, the details of a commercial agreement, product launch dates, and specific timelines remain undecided. Both companies are committed to a common goal of enhancing knowledge and developing innovative ideas. They plan to keep stakeholders updated with progress and further insights as their partnership evolves.
