Professor Shinichi Nishimura Participates in Disaster Response Training in Okayama City

In a proactive effort to enhance disaster response capabilities, Professor Shinichi Nishimura from the Faculty of Environmental Life Sciences at Okayama University recently participated as a Natural Disaster Support Advisor in a training organized by the Okayama City Fire Bureau. This training, held on July 2, 2026, marked the first practical application of the newly introduced Natural Disaster Support Advisor system implemented by the Fire Bureau in April of the same year. The system aims to provide expert advice during large-scale natural disasters, such as earthquakes and landslides, ensuring safe and efficient firefighting actions.

During this session, emergency responders, specifically the special rescue team of the Okayama City Fire Bureau, participated in a simulated scenario where heavy rainfall led to a landslide, trapping individuals beneath the debris. Professor Nishimura, an expert in geotechnical engineering, offered critical guidance based on the local terrain and soil conditions. His recommendations focused on ensuring safe access routes for rescuers, establishing evacuation pathways, and assessing potential secondary disaster risks.

Post-training, Professor Nishimura expressed his desire to continue advising firefighting teams on how debris might flow and on remaining threats in disaster-affected areas. The Fire Bureau expressed optimism about the collaboration with experts like Professor Nishimura, recognizing that such partnerships are vital for ensuring the safety of both rescue personnel and those in need of assistance.

Okayama University is dedicated to researching and implementing solutions for regional challenges, backed by initiatives such as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s J-PEAKS program. This effort of integrating geotechnical knowledge into disaster safety and rescue practices illustrates the university's commitment to nurturing a future where local communities thrive and innovations impact the world positively. Moving forward, Okayama University aims to further enhance regional disaster preparedness and resilience in collaboration with local governments and relevant institutions.

Documentation and media pieces covering the training exercises highlighted the interaction between Professor Nishimura and emergency responders, showcasing the cooperative spirit of this initiative.
