Celebrate the Intersection of Sumo and Design
An exciting event is set to take place at Daikanyama T-Site from December 24, 2025, to January 12, 2026. To commemorate the release of the first-ever costume design and art book, "SUMO and DESIGN," which hits the shelves on January 5, 2026, a special fair will be held, presenting exclusive merchandise and an exquisite display of the actual ceremonial sumo outfit, or "kesho-mawashi," worn by former sumo wrestler Kitazumi.
About the Book
"SUMO and DESIGN" delves into the fascinating world of traditional sumo wrestling attire, focusing on two distinctive garments: the ceremonial kesho-mawashi and the dyed kimono worn during matches and exhibitions. These intricate designs are exclusive to certain ranked wrestlers, handcrafted by skilled artisans, making each piece a unique masterpiece.
The book is a visual feast, featuring in-depth explanations of unseen sketches, design drafts, and rare photographs of the ceremonial outfits in use, supported by bilingual text in English and Japanese across 208 full-color pages. Furthermore, it includes behind-the-scenes insights from the craftsmen who create these garments, showcased through extensive interviews and photographic evidence.
