About Oi Shinjuku Rakugo Kaikan

Oi Shinjuku has a rich history, rooted in the days of underground markets. The Rakugo Kaikan started on May 14, 2022, with the aim of promoting the area through shows featuring seasoned performers like Yoshiki and Tatsu no Suke. The event collaborates with the narration art of Kodan, thanks to the serendipitous joining of storyteller Teina.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. On November 21, 2023, a devastating fire broke out in Oi Shinjuku, affecting eleven shops and necessitating relocations and closures. Only three businesses remain operational from that fateful day. Despite being temporarily forced to close for over eight months, the community and comrades in the scene supported the continuous staging of Rakugo performances.

In a noteworthy highlight, Yoshiki reached the status of Shin'uchi, an elite rank in Rakugo. Tatsu no Suke is set to follow suit this spring, marking a significant milestone in his career.

With Teina’s ascendancy to Shin'uchi imminent, the show will be relocated from Oi Gongen Shrine to the long-desired Kurian venue, creating a buzz of excitement around the event. The presence of special guest Katsura Miyaji is particularly thrilling, promising a wonderful evening of traditional Japanese storytelling.
