EDAN Instruments Highlights Commitment to Global Health Equity at WHA Event
EDAN Instruments Showcases Commitment to Global Health Equity
On May 20, 2025, Edan Instruments, Inc., a leading global medical device company, participated in a significant parallel event at the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva titled "China's Medical Technology Innovation and Its Implications for Global Health." The event, co-hosted by Tsinghua University and the University of Geneva, brought together innovators, policymakers, and development partners to discuss how Chinese medical technology is promoting equitable healthcare, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Co-founder Xicheng Xie delivered a powerful keynote address, highlighting Edan's dedication to accessible innovation for underserved communities. Xie emphasized that true innovation goes beyond cutting-edge technology; it embodies delivering appropriate solutions to those in greatest need. Reflecting on Edan's thirty-year journey, he shared the evolving meaning of innovation, underscoring the company's commitment to developing practical medical technologies designed for real-world environments.
During his presentation, Xie detailed a current initiative that employs Edan's portable Series Nano diagnostic ultrasound system to support essential prenatal care in resource-limited settings. This project focuses on equipping primary care personnel with tools for early detection and timely referral of high-risk pregnancies. Additionally, Xie highlighted other impactful technologies, such as handheld fetal Dopplers, Edan’s intelligent IQ algorithm, and its smart ECG web platform—all aimed at bridging infrastructure gaps and reducing reliance on scarce medical personnel.
With a solid presence in both high-end and resource-limited markets, Edan has established a global footprint stretching across Europe, Africa, and beyond. To enhance local collaboration and ensure effective service delivery, Edan has launched 22 subsidiaries worldwide. This localized support, coupled with a commitment to soliciting direct feedback, drives continuous product improvement and fosters significant impact.
Moreover, Edan actively engages in various relevant projects across LMICs, working alongside NGOs, public health agencies, and development partners. These initiatives encompass maternal health and women's care projects in South Africa, the deployment of portable diagnostics in West Africa, and ultrasound screening programs in Latin America. Annually, nearly 1,000 black-and-white ultrasound machines are implemented globally through NGO-led programs. These collaborations not only broaden access to essential healthcare but also contribute to local capacities through training and support.
Xie concluded, “At Edan, we believe in combining innovation with value to enhance the human condition. This mission underpins everything we do, from product designs to global collaborations.” As Edan celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025, the company remains steadfast in delivering relevant innovation, especially for those who need it most.
