National Initiative for Firework Safety Launched to Mark the 250th Fourth of July

National Firework Safety Initiative Expands Ahead of 250th Fourth of July

As America gears up to celebrate its 250th Fourth of July, the American Pyrotechnics Safety and Education Foundation (APSEF) has announced a significant expansion of its firework safety initiative called the Bucket Brigade. This program is aimed at reducing the incidents of fire-related accidents caused by improper disposal of fireworks post-celebration. Amidst concerns about drier than average conditions in numerous regions, the initiative emphasizes the importance of safe disposal as an essential step in fire prevention.

The Importance of Firework Safety

Fireworks are often synonymous with summer celebrations; however, they can pose considerable fire hazards when not handled correctly. Improper disposal can ignite trash, vegetation, and even nearby structures, which could lead to preventable fires. The Bucket Brigade emphasizes a straightforward procedure: residents should soak used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight before disposing of them. This practice significantly reduces the likelihood of accidental ignition.

Brandon Corn, the President of APSEF, stated, "This practical, community-oriented approach engages residents while helping fire departments mitigate fire risks associated with fireworks. Our goal is to assist fire service leaders in implementing this program across communities."

Measurable Effectiveness

The Bucket Brigade has already demonstrated success in several locations. In Colorado alone, 18 fire departments have formally adopted the program, while six additional departments have independently replicated its efforts. Statewide, nearly 2,000 buckets have been distributed, and the participation from fire departments has translated into concrete reductions in fires resulting from the poor disposal of fireworks.

For instance, officials in Castle Rock, Colorado, reported an astonishing zero fireworks-related emergency calls during the 2025 season after the introduction of the Bucket Brigade initiative. A local fire and life safety educator remarked, "The difference was significant with the implementation of the Bucket Brigade contributing greatly to this outcome, marking a positive shift in our community's approach to fire safety."

Nationwide Expansion

As fire departments prepare for the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, the Bucket Brigade initiative has extended its reach into eight additional states. The foundation is providing a comprehensive implementation package, which includes a user-friendly playbook, communication materials, and guidance for identifying local partners for sourcing buckets. Potential partners frequently include hardware stores, restaurants, and local businesses willing to support the cause by donating or repurposing containers.

Furthermore, the program serves as a wonderful opportunity for community engagement. It encourages collaborations with local schools and youth organizations to facilitate distribution efforts and ensure fire safety education is rooted within the community’s fabric.
