Understanding the Latest EC Site Speed Rankings and Insights for August 2026

EC Site Speed Rankings – August 2026

Gaprise, a leading overseas SaaS trading company based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has unveiled the latest rankings for the speed of EC sites in Japan's online shopping sector as of August 2026. Here’s a comprehensive exploration of the findings and implications for the industry.

Overview of the Rankings

  • - Survey Period: Data collected as of August 2026
  • - Conducting Body: Gaprise
  • - Subjects of Investigation: The top 300 companies from the 85th Direct Sales Ranking released by the Shuukan Tsuuhan Shimbun.
  • - Methodology: Utilized Google's Chrome User Experience Report dataset to compare the LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) values of sites accessed via 4G mobile devices. The research emphasized the importance of site performance, measured from the start of loading to the display of the main visual content.

What is LCP?

LCP, or Largest Contentful Paint, is one of Google’s Core Web Vitals, measuring the time it takes for the primary content of a webpage to become visible. Lower LCP values indicate faster visual rendering for users. Google recommends that the LCP element should appear within 2.5 seconds for an optimal user experience; anything over 4 seconds indicates a poorer experience. According to Renault’s case studies, achieving an LCP under one second correlates with significant performance improvements.

Top 10 Rankings Highlights

This month, notable newcomers to the top ten include the alcohol wholesale site “WINE PRO” at ninth place and the “Takashimaya Furusato Tax Donation” portal rounding out the top ten. Sites like “Mason Pearson” and “Mikirei” maintain a solid standing just outside the top ten, with LCP readings under 0.9 seconds.

Fascinatingly, there are now 133 sites outperforming major e-commerce giants like Amazon (134th, LCP 1.491 seconds), Yodobashi.com (147th, LCP 1.538 seconds), and BicCamera (115th, LCP 1.420 seconds)—a jump from 119 last month. This shift illustrates the growing consumer expectations regarding display speed, highlighting a competitive landscape where merely matching industry standards is no longer advantageous.

Insights from Website Performance Findings

A notable divide exists between the top-tier and lower-tier participants, showcasing a staggering 5.62 times difference in LCP values. Crucially, it's not front-end optimization strategies that dictate success; rather, the server response time (TTFB) proves to be the decisive factor. Most sites achieving LCP under one second also maintain TTFB under 0.5 seconds.

Many companies focus heavily on front-end improvements like image compression and lazy loading. However, the latest data highlights a critical truth: without fast TTFB, even the best front-end efforts fail to cross the crucial “one-second wall.” Sites with LCP under one second invariably recognize and optimize their backend infrastructure.

While some sites achieve under one second LCP with TTFB slightly exceeding 0.5 seconds, they record only minor excesses, staying within 0.6 seconds. Speedy server responses remain foundational to breaking through the one-second barrier. For those seeking effective improvements in TTFB and CDN utilization, further resources and data are available in related articles.
