Celebrating a New Era in Manufacturing: Gray and UBE's Groundbreaking in Louisiana



On February 25, 2025, Gray, a leader in construction and integrated services, alongside UBE C1 Chemicals America, Inc. (UCCA) and Cornerstone Energy Park (CEP), held an event to mark the beginning of a significant manufacturing facility in Waggaman, Louisiana. This groundbreaking ceremony emphasizes not only the partnership among these firms but also a shared mission to bolster the domestic supply chain of essential materials for the rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) industry.

A Strategic Investment for the Future



The ambitious $500 million facility is poised to become the first large-scale chemical manufacturing operation for UBE in the United States. It focuses on producing critical components like dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), vital for lithium-ion batteries and semiconductor production. Such components are pivotal in addressing the growing demand for electric vehicles and advanced electronic devices.

Stephen Gray, CEO of Gray, expressed excitement about the project, noting its potential to advance sustainable technologies while fortifying the domestic supply chain for electric vehicle components. “This state-of-the-art facility,” he remarked, “not only underscores our commitment to sustainable technologies but also plays a pivotal role in strengthening the domestic supply chain for electric vehicle battery components.”

Features of the Cutting-Edge Facility



The facility will be constructed at the strategically located Cornerstone Energy Park, known for its access to essential raw materials, a vast labor pool, and favorable logistics channels. The construction will see Gray offering architecture, construction, and engineering services, which include provision for modular, open-air chemical processing facilities. Notably, Japan's Morimatsu will contribute by manufacturing the processing modules.

Moreover, over 1,800 helical piles will be required for deep foundations along with an impressive 6,400 metric tons of steel to ensure structural integrity. This facility is set to feature advanced amenities such as a 34,000 gallons per minute (GPM) cooling tower, integrated onsite wastewater management systems, waste gas treatment, and specialized fire protection measures.

Job Creation and Economic Impact



The establishment of the UBE facility is predicted to create approximately 50 to 60 skilled jobs while generating over 400 employment opportunities on-site at peak construction times. This adds to the region’s economic growth, fostering not only job creation but also stimulating local businesses connected to the construction and manufacturing sectors.

With construction projected to conclude by 2027, this initiative is more than just a manufacturing facility; it represents a significant step in supporting the demand for lithium-ion batteries essential for the future of electric and hybrid vehicles.
