Baystate Franklin Nurses Mobilize for Fair Contract and Patient Care Enhancement
Mobilizing for Change: Baystate Franklin Nurses Take Action
On June 8th, 2026, registered nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) will gather for a banner action outside the Baystate Health Wellness Center in Northampton, Massachusetts. This event, organized by the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA), aims to amplify their ongoing fight for a fair contract that prioritizes both patient care and the well-being of the nursing staff.
The nurses’ call for action has been bolstered by widespread community support, with over 700 local residents signing a petition in favor of their cause. Additionally, the Greenfield City Council passed a unanimous resolution endorsing the nurses' contract efforts, highlighting the concern for healthcare access in Franklin County.
Last year, BFMC nurses voted an overwhelming 98.2% in favor of authorizing a potential strike due to persistent issues surrounding staffing, acceptable wages, recruitment, and workplace protections. Their voting decision reflects a growing frustration and concern over Baystate Health's management decisions that adversely impact both caregivers and the patients they serve.
Suzanne Love, a registered nurse and Co-Chair of the MNA Bargaining Committee, passionately stated, Baystate executives claim to care about our communities but their actions during negotiations indicate otherwise. Every day without a fair agreement makes it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain nurses in Franklin County, jeopardizing the quality of care our patients receive.
The nurses’ grievances stem from Baystate's refusal to accept several proposals meant to enhance staffing levels and patient care. Notably, these proposals include properly recognizing Emergency Department hallway beds for staffing calculations and restoring nurse coverage in vital areas like the Mental Health Unit. Furthermore, nurses are pressing for increased staffing support across medical-surgical units.
As for wages, current offers from Baystate fail to meet competitive standards set by other unionized hospitals in the region, particularly in critical departments such as the Emergency Department and the Mental Health Unit. This disparity in compensation has led to significant vacancies that threaten timely and effective patient care.
Co-Chair of the MNA Bargaining Committee, Marissa Potter, emphasized, We've demonstrated our willingness to compromise. It's critical for the health of our community that we invest in the nurses who provide care. It’s time for Baystate to come to the table and work towards a fair contract.
The upcoming banner action on June 8th is set to draw attention to the urgent need for a fair union contract, as well as the essential role nurses play in providing quality healthcare. Both nurses and community members will unite to advocate for an improved healthcare environment, not only for the workforce but for the patients who depend on their services.
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, representing the interests and rights of over 26,000 registered nurses across the state, has been at the forefront of this advocacy. Founded in 1903, the organization strives to enhance the nursing profession and ensure that high standards of practice are maintained.
This pivotal moment for the nurses of Baystate Franklin Institute reflects a broader struggle for better working conditions in healthcare institutions across the country, signaling a need for hospital administrations to listen to and act in solidarity with their nursing staff, benefitting the community as a whole.
