Samsung SDI Launches Production of Advanced 46-Series Cylindrical Batteries for U.S. Market

Samsung SDI has made significant strides in the battery manufacturing sector by commencing production of its 46-series cylindrical batteries, marked by a diameter of 46 millimeters. This new line not only represents a leap into next-generation battery technology for the company, but also aims to cater to the growing demand in micro mobility and electric vehicle sectors. The announcement was made from the company's headquarters in Seoul, further establishing Samsung SDI as a pioneer in the battery industry.

The company has already initiated the supply of these advanced battery modules to an American customer, underlining its commitment to expanding its international presence. This is particularly noteworthy as Samsung SDI is the first South Korean manufacturer to provide 46-series batteries to overseas clients.

The 46-series batteries, such as the 4695 variant produced at Samsung SDI's Cheonan plant, measure 46 millimeters in diameter and 95 millimeters in height. The initial batch has already been shipped from the company's Vietnamese facility, which is responsible for module assembly. Samsung SDI’s early production initiation—over a year ahead of schedule—highlights its superior manufacturing capabilities and robust quality control processes.

A key feature of the 46-series batteries is their use of a high-nickel NCA (Nickel, Cobalt, and Aluminum) cathode combined with a proprietary SCN (Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite) anode. This innovative chemistry has not only enhanced the overall energy density and longevity of the battery products but has also addressed safety concerns by preventing swelling. The design of the 46-series is also groundbreaking; Samsung SDI has adopted a tabless design, allowing electrodes to connect directly to current collectors, which optimizes the current flow path and significantly reduces internal resistance—by as much as 90%—thereby enhancing efficiency and performance.

Compared to its 21700 predecessor, the energy capacity of the 46-series batteries is remarkably six times larger. This means that for the same energy output, fewer cells are needed, streamlining the design and enhancing the efficiency of electric vehicles.

The unveiling of the 46-series lineup, which includes options like the 4680, 4695, 46100, and 46120, occurred during InterBattery 2025, a major trade show in South Korea. This timely introduction into the market comes as Samsung SDI is in discussions with leading electric vehicle manufacturers, further emphasizing its intent to become a key supplier in this rapidly expanding sector.

Market analysts predict a significant growth trajectory for 46-series cylindrical batteries, estimating an increase from 155 GWh this year to an impressive 650 GWh by 2030, driven by a healthy annual growth rate of 33%.

With the launch of the 46-series, Samsung SDI has diversified its product offerings, with a company representative stating, "We are focused on taking a leadership role in the 46-series market through our distinctive manufacturing technologies and quality management practices."

As a leader in battery and electronic material manufacturing, Samsung SDI continues to redefine the landscape of electric mobility, energy solutions, and IT devices, and aims to transition to entirely renewable energy across its global operations by 2050.
