CAS Teams Up with Microsoft to Accelerate Pharma and Chemistry Innovations

CAS and Microsoft: A Partnership for Innovation in Life Sciences

In a significant step towards innovation in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemistry sectors, CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has announced the launch of CAS Connections integrated within Microsoft Copilot. This innovative connector empowers Copilot users by providing access to the CAS Content Collection™ and CAS Newton™, an intelligent AI designed for scientific research.

This collaboration was particularly aimed at benefiting research and development teams working in these vital industries, which heavily depend on tailored scientific information and capabilities. CAS Connections leverages over 150 years of compiled scientific knowledge from CAS, along with the conversational intelligence of CAS Newton, seamlessly integrating them into the Microsoft Copilot environment where researchers write, analyze, and collaborate daily. This integration allows researchers to work more efficiently and make better-informed decisions.

Tim Wahlberg, the interim president of CAS, emphasized how scientists involved in drug discovery and chemical research rely on CAS as a trusted source for substance knowledge, reactions, and targets. “By collaborating with Microsoft, we are incorporating this expertise into Microsoft Copilot, enabling researchers to transition more rapidly from initial ideas to groundbreaking drugs and materials,” he noted.

Enhancing Research Workflows

The CAS-Microsoft connector facilitates deep integration into existing research workflows. For instance, a chemist drafting the experimental section of a report in Microsoft Word can now confirm a compound's CAS® registry number and its structure, check reaction conditions, and verify the availability of reagents through CAS records, all while citing the source as they write. Similarly, an intellectual property analyst using Microsoft Teams can investigate whether a substance has appeared in patent literature, and a business development analyst preparing a licensing presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint can embed relevant patent landscape information sourced from CAS.

Chantrelle Nielsen, Principal Product Manager for the Copilot platform at Microsoft, shared, “Our clients in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and chemistry sectors require an AI they can trust, based on reliable scientific information. The integration of CAS into Microsoft Copilot’s ecosystem was a strategic priority because CAS is an essential information source for these clients. Now, scientists, patent teams, and business analysts can easily access this trusted information directly within Copilot.”

Besides the Microsoft platform, CAS Connections serves to integrate CAS content and CAS Newton across various tools that research teams utilize daily, including electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), discovery platforms, and enterprise AI. CAS initially launched the CAS Connections with several key collaborators in June 2026.
