Event Overview
On July 27, 2026, mottECO FESTA 2026 will be held at Hotel Metropolitan Edmont in Tokyo, organized by the mottECO Promotion Consortium. This exciting event aims to raise awareness about food waste reduction by showcasing a variety of initiatives involving 37 collaborating organizations across industry, government, academia, and civil society.

Key Highlights
Returning for its fourth year, this event promises to be bigger and better than ever. The keynote speaker will be Yuko Sakita, the president of the Nationwide Delicious Food Completion Network Council, who will share valuable insights into the mission of combating food waste. Participants can expect a range of activities, including:
  • - Exhibits from government ministries and local municipalities showcasing successful food waste reduction cases.
  • - Panel discussions revolving around sustainability and food waste initiatives.
  • - A tasting corner featuring the 'Mottainai Menu', where chefs from Hotel Metropolitan Edmont will prepare dishes that maximize the use of ingredients.
  • - A food drive to promote the sharing of surplus food.

Expected Attendance
With previous years attracting substantial crowds—about 580 attendees in 2025—the 2026 event anticipates around 600 participants. The diverse audience will include government officials, sustainability professionals from private companies, university representatives, general consumers, and members of the press.

Free Participation with Registration
Entry is free; however, registration is required in advance. Interested participants can reserve their spot through a dedicated registration form available on the event's official website.

Join Us for a Sustainable Future
The mottECO initiative encourages customers who cannot finish their meals to take home leftovers safely. Upon request, they receive a flyer with guidelines and a container to ensure safe transportation. This promotes a culture where diners take responsibility, ensuring leftover food does not end up as waste.

Since incorporating the mottECO program in April 2022 after guidance from the Ministry of the Environment, Japan Hotel Co. has collaborated with various food service and hotel companies to amplify awareness about sustainable dining. As of May 2026, over 1,600 establishments have adopted the mottECO framework, culminating in recognition from the Ministry of the Environment with the Minister’s Prize for Food Waste Reduction Promotion.
