On October 2, 2025, a collaborative online seminar hosted by Sumitomo Electric Industries and Emuni will shed light on the application of generative AI in research and development. This event aims to discuss how generative AI is transforming data extraction from papers and patents into an automated electronic lab notebook format, marking a new phase in R&D utilization.
The seminar, titled "Utilizing R&D Data in the New Phase—Assetizing Experimental Knowledge with Generative AI to Accelerate Discovery and Prediction," will take place via Zoom from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (JST). Participants interested in the integration of digital transformation and AI in manufacturing are encouraged to attend. The session will offer insights into practical strategies for enhancing research through data-driven methodologies.
One of the focal points of the seminar will be demonstrating how generative AI can accelerate data extraction and predictive analytics within the R&D landscape. Sumitomo Electric will discuss the significance of digitizing and assetizing empirical knowledge, allowing practitioners to tap into collective expertise and experimental data. This approach not only safeguards invaluable insights but also complements material informatics (MI) initiatives—a field in which the company has been actively innovating.
Emuni CEO Yuta Shimono will present effective methodologies for automating the entry of material data into electronic lab notebooks. By leveraging AI to standardize and visualize numerical and qualitative information sourced from patents and research publications, the process allows researchers to focus on critical analysis and innovation rather than mundane data input tasks. The seminar will outline experiences from the field where a fast-paced, iterative development style has solved contemporary challenges.
The seminar schedule will include a series of presentations and discussions:
- - 12:00 PM - 12:05 PM: Introduction and Welcome, led by Kazuma Monzen from Emuni.
- - 12:05 PM - 12:20 PM: Tatsuya Takakuwa, Group Leader of the AI Promotion Department at Sumitomo Electric, will address current trends in data-driven R&D practices and the role of generative AI in enhancing predictive capabilities.
- - 12:20 PM - 12:35 PM: Yuta Shimono will share a case study on the automated extraction of physical properties from academic literature and its integration into electronic lab notebooks.
- - 12:35 PM - 1:00 PM: A cross-talk discussion between Takakuwa and Shimono will explore generative AI strategies in R&D, addressing the symbiosis between large corporations and startups in the context of material informatics.
The seminar aims to illustrate the potential of generative AI to reshape R&D paradigms by transforming how researchers engage with data, fostering a collaborative approach to development. This free event emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in an industry that is rapidly evolving. Interested participants can register until the seminar starts by visiting
