Dubai Municipality Launches Circle Dubai Project for Sustainability and Waste Reduction

Dubai's Circle Dubai Project: A Leap Towards Sustainability

In a bold move to strengthen its commitment to global sustainability initiatives, the Dubai Municipality has launched the Circle Dubai project. This ambitious venture was unveiled during the Asia-Pacific Cities Summit – Mayors Forum 2025, held in Dubai from October 27 to 29, 2025.

A Vision for Waste Management

Circle Dubai is designed as a community-focused initiative that aims to minimize waste generation while boosting recycling efforts. This project aligns perfectly with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which envisions a sustainable and comprehensive approach to waste management throughout the emirate.

The core mission of Circle Dubai is to significantly reduce waste before it is even produced, encouraging 100% source-sorting across all residential areas. The initiative is set to divert various waste types from landfills and enhance recycling and treatment processes, ultimately supporting Dubai’s long-term environmental objectives.

Key Voices Behind the Initiative

H.E. Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the crucial need for public awareness and participation in achieving the project’s ambitious goals. He noted that the project not only highlights the environmental advantages of proper waste management but also expresses the economic benefits tied to reducing and sorting waste. This approach seeks to foster a community response, motivating both individuals and organizations to adopt eco-friendly practices. Ultimately, this initiative aspires to transform Dubai into a zero-waste city and a global leader in sustainable living and environmental preservation.

Eng. Adel Al Marzouqi, CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, mentioned that Circle Dubai is targeting nine critical sectors within the city. These sectors include residential and commercial areas, industries, agriculture, real estate, tourism, education, waste management, and labor employment. The overarching goal is to enhance Dubai’s attractiveness and drive a collective change in behavior through a common sense of social responsibility.

Education and Community Engagement

To support its objectives, Dubai Municipality has developed an innovative digital education system powered by smart technologies. This system includes tailored training content specifically for each targeted sector, linking knowledge to everyday behaviors. Additionally, the Dubai Sustainability Ambassadors program will be initiated, in collaboration with the Dubai Neighbourhoods Ambassadors initiative, aimed at selecting and training representatives from various sectors who will serve as leaders in awareness campaigns. Activities will encompass practical experiences and direct outreach initiatives, such as door-to-door campaigns.

Circle Dubai is bolstered by a network of partnerships with the private sector and features a comprehensive plan involving 17 strategically implementing projects. The execution of these projects will be guided by 26 performance indicators designed to enhance sector integration, ultimately creating a sustained impact on Dubai’s waste management and environmental standards.

In conclusion, the Circle Dubai project represents a pivotal step towards achieving an eco-friendly future for the city. With robust community participation, educational initiatives, and strategic partnerships, it sets a benchmark for other cities looking to bolster their sustainability efforts and embrace a circular economy. As Dubai continues to forge ahead in its quest for a greener tomorrow, Circle Dubai stands as a testament to its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
