Shanghai Electric Marks International Day for Biological Diversity with Local Eco Practices

Shanghai Electric's Commitment to Biodiversity

On May 22, 2026, Shanghai Electric, a leading energy and equipment manufacturing company listed on both the Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges, highlighted its local ecological practices in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity. The emphasis was on how industrial projects can mitigate environmental impact while actively promoting biodiversity in their operational areas.

This year’s theme, "Act Locally for Global Impact," calls for global sustainability commitments to be translated into practical actions at local levels. For industries, safeguarding biodiversity starts with effective on-site measures, from adopting cleaner energy sources to enhancing environmental management practices. Notably, Shanghai Electric's projects in both China and Malaysia illustrate this localized approach in different operational contexts.

One of the standout projects is the Mianchuan Wind Farm, recognized as the first large-scale "zero-emission island" powered entirely by renewable energy in the Yangtze River basin. The project features 18 custom-designed EW5.6N-202 wind turbines, specifically built for the island's unique conditions. Fully connected to the power grid in May 2025 and operational by September, these turbines not only supply electricity to 32,000 residents but also contribute over 200 million kWh of green power to nearby areas. By saving an impressive 96,000 tons of conventional coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 240,000 tons annually, the project has become a hallmark of local energy management.

Additionally, the Mianchuan Wind Farm has created 500 local jobs and generated an annual production value of 200 million yuan, along with contributing 15 million yuan (approximately 2.2 million USD) in taxes. The custom low-speed turbines facilitate a complementary system of wind, solar, and storage energy, forming a replicable model for carbon-free transformation suitable for similar islands across the Yangtze.

In Sarawak, Malaysia, Shanghai Electric initiated the Similajau Bunut 500kV transmission line, extending over 106 kilometers. This project exemplifies infrastructure development that is sensitive to local ecosystems and communities. During its progression, the company employed a thorough HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environment) management approach, achieving a perfect compliance record with no significant environmental incidents or community conflicts. This project successfully managed waste and wastewater, showcased zero pollution incidents, and maintained wildlife safety, thus ensuring a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric remains committed to implementing localized eco-friendly practices across all its projects, continuously supporting biodiversity protection and helping industrial projects minimize their environmental footprints. The company exemplifies how responsible industrial operations can coexist with nature while providing valuable resources and job opportunities to local communities.
