Koala Japan Celebrates the Establishment of Sleep Performance Day

Sleep Performance Day: A New Celebration for Better Sleep

On July 22, Japan celebrates the newly recognized 'Sleep Performance Day,' established by Koala Sleep Japan. This unique holiday focuses on the quality of sleep for Japanese people and is officially recognized by the Japan Memorial Day Association. Every year, it will observe its celebration on the first day of 'Dai-sho,' one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Japanese calendar. In 2025, this significant day will fall on July 22.

What is Sleep Performance?

'Sleep Performance' is an abbreviation for 'sleep quality optimization.' It implies experiencing a sense of sufficient rest even within limited sleep hours. Koala aims to address chronic sleep deprivation in Japan by enhancing sleep performance through various awareness activities starting in 2024. Despite spending adequate hours in bed, factors such as room temperature, humidity, bedding condition, and stress often hinder deep sleep, preventing individuals from enjoying the restorative benefits of slumber. Koala strives to improve this often invisible quality of sleep, termed 'sleep performance.'

The Background of Establishing Sleep Performance Day

The average sleep duration for Japanese people ranks among the lowest globally, marking chronic sleep deprivation as a pressing societal issue. Mid-summer, particularly during 'Dai-sho,' is characterized by extreme heat, which negatively affects sleep quality. Recognizing this, Koala conducted a survey on sleep conditions targeting men and women in their 20s to 60s in March 2024, aligning with World Sleep Day. Alarmingly, about 37.6% of participants expressed dissatisfaction with their sleep habits. The dissatisfaction rates were notably higher among women: 47.1% of women in their 40s, 46.6% in their 50s, and a staggering 41.0% of women in their 30s. Such statistics reveal a significant concern regarding sleep quality among the female demographic.

Further inquiries revealed that while 74.3% of respondents wanted to improve their sleep, over 50.1% admitted uncertainty about how to act or found seeking help overly burdensome. This sends a clear message that many individuals seeking better sleep quality are unable to identify practical methods, leading to a rise in 'sleep improvement refugees.'

Koala identifies this as an opportunity to address the recurring issues during the challenging summer season, proposing a reallocation of attention towards improving sleep standard and creating positive habits. The establishment of Sleep Performance Day aims to stir awareness and action towards creating a conducive sleeping environment.

About Koala

Improving 'sleep performance' is vital for the sleep-deprived population in Japan, the country with the least hours of sleep among 33 OECD countries. Sleep deprivation affects daily performance. Established in 2015 in Australia with a D2C (Direct to Consumer) business model, Koala has introduced mattresses that enhance sleep quality in Japan since 2017 based on extensive research.

In September 2024, the 'Original Koala Mattress' was awarded two accolades for being the top recommendation in popular rankings for high-resilience and low-resilience mattresses by a product comparison service. Continuing to innovate, the company launched the 'Koala Mattress® PLUS' and 'Koala Mattress® SUPREME' in October the same year, demonstrating a commitment to design, reflecting Australia’s serene natural beauty.

Koala is also dedicated to a healthier living environment by contributing over AU$1.5 million to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), assisting in the preservation of endangered species like kangaroos. In Japan, they support the protection of native species like Amami black rabbits and Miyako green lizards.
