NAL Technologies Launches Revolutionary ALTM-T for Precision Timing and Infrastructure Applications

Introduction

NAL Technologies, renowned for its innovative solutions in assured positioning, navigation, and timing (APNT), has recently unveiled its latest product: the ALTM-T module. This new addition promises to be a game changer in precision timing applications particularly for critical infrastructure sectors including energy, finance, and transportation.

Understanding ALTM-T

The ALTM-T is crafted specifically to address the growing need for redundancy in timing and synchronization, especially in environments that are increasingly reliant on GNSS/GPS signals. As modern infrastructure evolves and becomes more interconnected, the risk of cyberattacks and other vulnerabilities targeting these signals increases substantially. The ALTM-T seeks to mitigate these threats by providing a versatile and robust alternative.

One notable feature of the ALTM-T is its outstanding reduction in size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP). It is currently the smallest and lightest receiver on the market that provides precise timing with a remarkable accuracy of less than 50 nanoseconds RMS. This makes it an ideal choice for systems that operate under strict SWaP constraints, particularly in environments where every ounce of efficiency matters.

Performance and Specifications

According to Rob Gillette, the APNT Solutions Director at NAL Technologies, "APNT technology complements GNSS/GPS, which serves as the unseen backbone of today's modern infrastructure." He emphasizes the risks posed by a potential failure of mainstream GNSS/GPS signals, which can lead to cascading failures across several critical sectors including utilities and financial markets. The ALTM-T aims to bolster this weak link by enriching the timing synchronization, thus enhancing operational reliability.

The embedded ALTM-T receiver takes advantage of the Iridium® Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) signal. Notably, this signal is approximately 1,000 times stronger than typical GNSS/GPS signals and is capable of penetrating indoor environments, making it highly reliable against both intentional and unintentional signal disruptions. This fortifies the integrity of operations within sectors that demand continual connectivity and precise timing.

Applications and Impact

The ALTM-T's versatility makes it an essential tool for critical infrastructures—power grids, financial systems, and data centers all rely heavily on precise timestamps and reliable communications. In power grids, for instance, the loss of timing synchronization could result in catastrophic failures. The ALTM-T aims to prevent such scenarios by providing a steadfast and complementary timing source that can maintain operational continuity even in adverse conditions.

Adding to the advancements in this field, Naltec has deployed over 13,000 receivers successfully since its initial ALTM launch in 2019, showcasing a strong track record and experience in delivering pioneering solutions.

Commercial Availability

The ALTM-T module is now commercially available and has commenced shipping. To learn more about the capabilities of the ALTM-T and the entire ALTM line, NAL Technologies will be participating in the upcoming ATIS Workshop on Synchronization and Timing Systems (WSTS), scheduled for May 4-7. Attendees can engage with company representatives through scheduled meetings or direct inquiries.
