Embracing Change: Ryo Uchida’s Artistic Evolution
Ryo Uchida's journey has been marked by an ever-growing acceptance of spontaneity and transformation in his creative process. After his prior exhibition in 2024 at the same venue, Uchida has continuously explored, incorporated, and learned from the unpredictable nature of art. In this new collection, audiences will witness paintings that don't just represent stable images but embody a dynamic and unstable essence, reflecting constant flux.
Uchida’s practice has evolved significantly over the years. He often grappled with the confines of his work, where colors and shapes induced specific interpretations. However, his current creations illustrate a shift towards a collaborative engagement with these elements, embracing the unexpected in his artwork. The recent pieces prominently feature his brush strokes and an expansive approach to symbolic forms.
These developments are not merely coincidental. Uchida’s recognition, notably receiving the Jury Award from the Haruhi Painting Triennale in 2020, laid the groundwork for his upcoming exhibition and underscored the continuous thread of innovation within his artistic journey, culminating in his solo exhibitions.
'Tide Pool': A Metaphor for Artistic Coexistence
The exhibition's title,
'Tide Pool', evokes imagery of small ecosystems formed by seawater left behind on rock formations as the tide recedes. It symbolizes an environment where diverse elements converge by chance, coexisting in a space of measured distance. This intricate yet uncertain life is a poignant reminder of the fragility and complexity surrounding existence. For Uchida, this image parallels memories of his childhood spent at the beach and has become a central theme in his current body of work.
Uchida employs water and paint in an almost fluid choreography, pouring them onto canvas in a manner reminiscent of ocean waves. This technique creates unforeseen forms and relationships, blurring the line between the painter and the painted. The dynamic interplay results in a state where imagery continues to transform and emerge, rather than arriving at a concluded form. The exhibition invites viewers to experience the ongoing evolution of relationships within the artwork, exhibiting not merely completed pieces but manifestations of relationships as they unfold.

Artist’s Insight: Ryo Uchida's Reflections
Ryo Uchida notes, "Whenever I see puddles after the rain, I feel as if something is swimming within, drawing me back to my childhood memories by the sea. When the tide recedes, it creates these small tide pools where organisms appear to inhabit, measuring distances amongst one another within that constrained environment. This phenomenon resembles a microcosm of the beautiful interplays at sea, yet it holds a certain dissonance as well. When I pour water and paint onto a pristine canvas, I see myself as the waves, the rock pools, the wriggling life forms, and the observing onlooker, all simultaneously. This transformation isn't aimed at predefined outputs; it's about spontaneous expressions and unexpected encounters, echoing the cyclical nature of life."
