Celebrating 140 Years of AD Works Group Through Coffee Planting in Nepal
As part of its 140th anniversary celebration, AD Works Group, a leading investment real estate company based in Tokyo, is launching a coffee planting initiative in Nepal. This project is not just about marking a milestone; it aims to contribute to the local economy and addresses environmental issues tied to coffee production. The initiative stands as a testament to the company’s vision of creating a society where wealth circulates, enabling everyone to ignite their passion.
Reconnecting with Coffee: A Social Perspective
Coffee is not only a beloved beverage among AD Works employees, but it serves as a lens through which social and environmental challenges, like deforestation and climate change, can be viewed. Known as the “Coffee 2050 problem,” concerns about future coffee production are significant given the rising threats to sustainable practices. By engaging with coffee planting, AD Works hopes to foster dialogue around local and global issues and support sustainable coffee farming practices.
The project includes an intriguing feature: after about three years from planting, donors will receive coffee beans harvested from their planted trees. This initiative allows participants to envision the future of both the coffee industry and the company, creating a deeper connection beyond mere donations.
Sustainable Coffee Cultivation in Nepal
The coffee planting project is being carried out in collaboration with BIKAS COFFEE, a company specializing in coffee cultivation and sales based in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Employees of AD Works have the opportunity to learn about the social challenges faced by the coffee industry through an internal seminar scheduled for 2025. This educational effort spurred a group of employees to propose the coffee planting initiative as a significant part of their 140th-anniversary celebrations.
Nepal, recognized as an emerging coffee-producing region, offers optimal conditions for coffee cultivation in its mountainous areas. Instead of adopting plantation-style farming that requires extensive deforestation, BIKAS COFFEE promotes agroforestry methods that make use of existing forest environments while protecting nature. This sustainable approach resonates with many employees dedicated to responsible coffee production.
Creating Circles of Wealth
In rural Nepal, challenges such as youth migration for overseas jobs and the aging farming population add to the socio-economic hurdles. This project aims to foster additional income for farmers and expand employment opportunities for young people in the region. After three years, those who contributed will receive coffee beans harvested from the trees they helped plant.
This initiative transcends traditional planting and donation efforts by supporting local production while providing tangible benefits to donors. Such a model exemplifies the vision of creating wealth cycles shared by both AD Works Group and BIKAS COFFEE.
Through this endeavor, the company aims to contribute to a sustainable society, strengthen the bonds between the organization and its employees, and harness the 140th anniversary as an opportunity for organizational revitalization.
