Revolutionizing Detection of Steatotic Liver Disease with Briya's AIRE AI
In an innovative breakthrough, Briya, a health AI company focused on reshaping healthcare research, has unveiled compelling findings from a real-world study utilizing their AIRE platform. This AI-driven analytical tool has expanded the identification of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) by a staggering 360%, relying on previously overlooked unstructured radiology data. The study's results signal a new era for patient identification and intervention in the realm of liver diseases.
Dr. Gadi Lalazar, Head of the Liver Unit at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, remarked on the transformative impact of the AIRE platform, asserting, "Many of these patients may not have known they had steatotic liver disease because the finding was buried in an ultrasound report performed for some other reason." This highlights the pressing need for more effective patient identification strategies, especially in cases where disease indicators are not explicitly mentioned in structured reports.
The research incorporated an extensive analysis of 28,795 abdominal ultrasound reports from 20,422 unique patients collected between 2020 and 2024. Astonishingly, the study revealed that 78% of the identified steatotic liver cases were unearthed solely through Briya's advanced natural language processing (NLP) capabilities, rather than established structured data or diagnostic codes. In doing so, the relevant study population increased from 1,122 patients to 5,158, a genuine expansion reflecting the unmet needs in current healthcare diagnostics.
The gap in diagnosis is stark. Only 22% of identified steatotic liver patients had a diagnosis noted in structured electronic health records (EHR), while the vast majority were recognized through the innovative NLP analysis implemented by AIRE. External expert validation validated the effectiveness of this approach, indicating a precision of 94% and a recall of 97% for steatotic liver detection.
The enhanced study population subsequently allowed researchers to evaluate the risk of disease progression using pre-existing laboratory data and ultrasound reports. An alarming 4,368 patients were identified whose FIB-4 scores indicated they exceeded the conventional at-risk threshold. This critical information empowers healthcare providers to initiate timely interventions, potentially reversing disease progression before it reaches irreversible stages.
The AIRE platform is designed to streamline the complex data preparation required for such extensive studies, allowing for greater efficiency while maintaining scientific rigor. Dr. Or Shaked, Director of Medical Research Solutions at Briya, emphasized how AIRE's specialized research agents not only extract relevant information from unstructured fields but also harmonize it with existing structured data. This synergy facilitates a deeper exploration of existing information without necessitating additional data collection efforts that could burden clinical workflows.
"By automating the labor-intensive aspects of data handling, AIRE accelerates the entire research timeline, enabling researchers to focus on critical scientific inquiries that significantly impact patient care," Dr. Shaked elaborated.
These findings from Briya's AIRE platform will be presented at AASLD's The Liver Meeting 2026 on November 6, during a session dedicated to the epidemiology and natural history of MASLD. This presentation aims to spark further discourse on the importance of leveraging real-world data and innovative AI solutions to identify overlooked patient populations effectively.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, tools like AIRE empower organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and research institutions to tap into existing routine data strategically. By utilizing these insights, they can enhance risk stratification and create valuable real-world evidence without imposing additional diagnostic burdens on healthcare providers.
Briya's dedication to pushing the boundaries of health AI continues to redefine research methodologies. As they navigate the complexities of fragmented data, AIRE stands as a beacon of hope for improving patient outcomes in steatotic liver disease and beyond.
