Mark your calendars! The highly anticipated
29th Hino Shinsegumi Festival is set to take place on
May 9 and
10, 2026. This festival not only celebrates historical figures from Japan's past but also invites both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere.
Scheduled around the anniversary of Vice Commander
Toshizo Hijikata's death, the festival will kick off on
May 9 with events held around
Takahata Fudoson. Participants can look forward to thrilling contests, including the exciting
Shinsengumi Contest.
The festival proceeds on
May 10 with a spectacular
Parade of Warriors through the
Koshukaido area, highlighting traditional attire and activities that pay homage to the legendary
Shinsengumi.
Participant Recruitment
Starting
February 1, the festival committee will open applications for individuals wishing to participate in the parade and the Shinsengumi Contest. Would-be warriors are encouraged to apply, with the following details:
- - Eligibility: Open to anyone born on or before April 1, 2011
- - Participation Fee:
- Costume rental participation:
13,000 yen (12,500 yen for city residents)
- Costume brought from home:
7,500 yen (7,000 yen for city residents)
- - Application Period: February 1 - 28, 2026
- - Limits on Participation: The parade can accommodate 156 participants, selected through a lottery system in the event of overwhelming responses.
- - Location for Parade: Gathering at Hinojuku on Koshukaido from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on May 10.
Shinsengumi Contest Details
For those looking to step into the shoes of legendary figures like
Kondo Isami or
Hijikata Toshizo, there will be an opportunity to showcase your skills in the
Shinsengumi Contest on
May 9 from
1:30 PM to 4:00 PM.

- - Total Participants in Contest: Limited to 40 contestants selected via lottery if the applicants exceed capacity.
