MPS Japan Celebrates Two Decades in the Country with a Bold Rebranding Initiative

MPS Japan: A Milestone in Sustainability

MPS Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, led by CEO Yoshiyuki Matsushima) recently celebrated a significant milestone: 20 years of operations in Japan as of August 1, 2026. Known for its commitment to environmental responsibility in the floral industry, MPS operates a framework that records and assesses environmental impacts and resource usage in flower production, making strides towards sustainable practices.

Over the years, MPS has primarily served the flower sector within Japan, yet there remains an ongoing challenge: effectively communicating the value of sustainable efforts and certifications to both consumers and retailers. To address this, MPS Japan has initiated a rebranding strategy aimed at elevating its certification status from merely a badge of trust to a recognized 'brand of reliable flowers.' This evolution marks a significant step towards a broader acknowledgment of the growers' hard work behind flower production.

Evolution of MPS

Founded in 1995 through a collaborative initiative from Dutch producers, MPS has grown into an internationally recognized certification system. The MPS-ABC certification continuously monitors the use of pesticides, fertilizers, energy, water, and waste, providing a rigorous assessment of the environmental footprint of production activities. Currently, around 3,300 producers across 50 countries utilize this certification.

MPS-ABC transcends mere compliance checks. It serves as a monitoring tool, empowering growers to reduce their environmental impact and improve their operations based on recorded data. MPS Japan was established on August 1, 2006, and has focused on promoting MPS, offering support to participants, and conducting assessments and certifications in the Japanese market for the past two decades, building trust in environmental-friendly flower production along the way.

Why Rebranding Now?

Consumer preferences for flowers are gradually shifting. While aesthetic qualities like color, shape, and longevity have traditionally guided flower selection, MPS Japan believes that understanding how flowers are cultivated will become a vital aspect of value. Hence, it is essential to relay the growers' efforts—focused on environmentally conscious practices, resource management, and continuous improvement—to consumers in a clear manner.
