Novotel Commemorates One Year of Ocean Conservation Partnership with WWF

As World Ocean Day approaches on June 8, Novotel proudly celebrates the first anniversary of its groundbreaking three-year partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This collaboration signifies a robust commitment to safeguarding the ocean's health and sustainability, showcasing Novotel's dedication to impactful environmental practices.

Launch of Sustainable Seafood Principles

Under this partnership, Novotel has launched its Sustainable Seafood Principles in collaboration with WWF France, aiming to enhance responsible sourcing practices across its 600 hotels worldwide. The initiative includes critical guidelines developed by WWF fisheries experts, which outline a commitment to phasing out 350 endangered seafood species by 2027. Furthermore, Novotel pledges to serve only fish that is either MSC-certified or sustainably sourced, and to utilize ASC or organic-certified farmed seafood for species such as salmon and shrimp.

Advancing Plant-Forward Initiatives

In addition to sustainable seafood, Novotel has introduced a global Plant-Forward ambition, targeting a minimum of 25% plant-based options on menus by 2026. Currently, 39% of Novotel hotels already meet this food philosophy. Driven by culinary excellence, this approach not only promotes health but also significantly impacts sustainability in the food service industry.

Engaging Families Through Education

To engage the next generation in ocean conservation, Novotel introduces two educational games for families staying at their hotels. Designed in collaboration with WWF France, the interactive card and digital game “Guardians of the Mediterranean” fosters knowledge about ocean conservation. Another initiative, “Sea Turtle,” presents a vibrant digital quiz that educates children about the threats to turtles during migration, including issues like pollution and discarded fishing gear.

Jean-Yves Minet, Novotel Global Brand President, emphasizes the importance of nurturing marine ambassadors among younger visitors. He believes that by planting seeds of curiosity and responsibility, Novotel plays a vital role in shaping a more sustainable future for marine ecosystems.

Year of Progress Towards Ocean Sustainability

Since the inception of this partnership in June 2024, Novotel has made notable advances in its ocean preservation strategy. Key initiatives include:
  • - Reducing Plastic Usage: Novotel is committed to eliminating single-use plastics throughout its operations, transitioning to refillable dispensers, and minimizing food waste.
  • - Project Collaborations: The brand has initiated a globally coordinated Fishery Improvement Project in 2025, aimed at supporting sustainable seafood sourcing and enhancing traceability standards.
  • - Ocean Awareness Training: New training programs are in place for hotel teams, focusing on the importance of oceans, sustainable seafood sourcing, and best practices in hospitality.
  • - Research and Innovation Support: Novotel endorses WWF conservation projects, including protecting painstakingly vital marine areas like Posidonia meadows and combating ghost fishing gear's impact on marine life.

The Road Ahead

Looking forward, Novotel aims to further amplify its ocean impact. Upcoming plans include collaboration with industry leaders during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, launching comprehensive seafood training programs, and introducing numerous guest engagement initiatives focused on ocean conservation.

As Jean-Yves Minet eloquently puts it, "The ocean is our planet's greatest source of balance. To secure a sustainable future, we must ensure marine health and reduce our impact on these ecosystems." Novotel's proactive steps represent more than just a commitment to environmental responsibility—it's a pledge to future generations for a healthier planet. By prioritizing actions that advocate for ocean longevity, Novotel stands as a model for sustainable hospitality in the era of climate change.
