Jewish American Heritage Month Kicks off on May 1 with Exciting Events and Awareness Campaigns

Jewish American Heritage Month Kicks Off on May 1

Each May, Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) provides a platform to honor the exceptional history, achievements, and culture of Jewish Americans. The event, commemorated through presidential proclamations, is entering its vibrant phase this year with numerous educational initiatives and events aimed at sharing the rich stories of Jewish life in America.

The Essence of JAHM

JAHM was established to celebrate the significant impact Jewish Americans have made to the cultural fabric of the United States. This year, under the leadership of the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, over 200 cultural, educational, religious, and advocacy organizations nationwide will collaborate to present a series of engaging programs, both online and in-person.

Dan Tadmor, President and CEO of The Weitzman, emphasized the importance of recognizing Jewish Americans' role in shaping national narratives that span nearly four centuries. He stated, "As the nation marks America's 250th anniversary, JAHM offers a timely opportunity to recognize how Jewish Americans have helped shape our country from its earliest days and continue to contribute to its future." The program proves to be especially relevant in today’s context of rising antisemitism, acting as a protective and enlightening shield against prejudice through education and inclusion.

Exciting Month-Long Events

The 2026 edition of JAHM promises a diverse range of events designed to enrich understanding and appreciation for Jewish heritage:

  • - May 3: Dual Heritage Month Family Day - Celebrate alongside Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This festive day at The Weitzman will include music, dance, interactive crafts, workshops, and tours suitable for all ages, crafted in collaboration with the American Jewish Committee and Pennsylvania Asian Pacific American Jewish Alliance.

  • - May 6: Virtual Lecture on Jews and the American Revolution - Award-winning historian Laura Arnold Leibman will lead a captivating online session exploring the critical contributions of Jews during the American Revolution, showcasing how their involvement redefined Jewish life in the nation.

  • - May 7: The First Salute Virtual Event - A notable online discussion featuring Leibman and Tadmor that highlights a fascinating yet lesser-known group of Jewish merchants whose efforts significantly influenced American independence.

  • - May 13: Evening of Sephardic Music - Lively performances by multi-talented artist Lily Henley aim to revive and celebrate Sephardic musical traditions, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation.

These events will be complemented by the opening of The Weitzman’s new exhibition, “The First Salute,” which presents historical narratives illustrating the intersection of Jewish faith, courage, and the quest for freedom.

Educational Resources and Community Engagement

Educational outreach is a crucial element of JAHM. This year, the initiative includes grants for school librarians to develop and expand their collections with materials that highlight Jewish identity and experiences. Furthermore, partnerships with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and the American Federation of Teachers aim to equip educators with vetted resources on Jewish American history and culture.

The central hub for all JAHM activities, resources, and stories can be found on the official website, where a wealth of learning opportunities await. Educators and community members can access toolkits for sharing experiences and promoting understanding using designated hashtags such as #MyJAHM and #OurSharedHeritage.

Celebrating a Rich Legacy

Since its inception through efforts by dedicated leaders and organizations, Jewish American Heritage Month has flourished, evolving into a national celebration of the Jewish American experience. Annual commemorations have included notable events like the first presidential reception for JAHM at the White House and fascinating historical milestones, ensuring that the stories of Jewish Americans continue to resonate and enlighten future generations.

As we step into May, let us join hands in celebrating the vibrancy of Jewish culture and community, nurturing shared understanding and respect, while looking forward to continuing the narrative of Jewish contributions to America’s rich tapestry.
