Addressing Over-The-Counter Drug Overdose Issues Through Education and Support

Addressing Over-The-Counter Drug Overdose Issues Through Education and Support

Introduction

On June 13, 2026, Shionogi Healthcare Co., Ltd., a leading healthcare provider based in Osaka, participated in the 45th Basic Training Conference for School Pharmacists organized by the Tokyo School Pharmacists Association. During this event, a representative from Shionogi delivered a presentation focused on the growing concern of over-the-counter (OTC) drug overdoses, particularly among the younger population, and the crucial role of school pharmacists in addressing this problem.

The Significance of the Conference

In recent years, the prevalence of OTC drug overdoses has gained significant attention as a pressing social issue, particularly affecting youth. This conference aimed to enhance the professional skills of school pharmacists and improve their ability to address health challenges within educational environments. The response to the event was overwhelmingly positive, with 66 participants attending, a number surpassing the previous year’s average by 1.3 times, highlighting the urgent need for effective interventions.

The Growing Concern of OTC Drug Overdoses

The misuse of medications such as cough suppressants and cold medicines is becoming increasingly problematic, especially among young individuals. Social media platforms have facilitated the spread of information, leading to a rise in the incidence of overdoses. Various factors contribute to this issue, including feelings of loneliness and isolation, psychological stress, and environmental influences from home and school settings.

Key Points of the Presentation

During the presentation, the following three strategies were proposed for school pharmacists:
1. Promoting Accurate Understanding of Overdoses: The need for correct information regarding the health risks associated with overdosing, including acute poisoning and addiction, was emphasized. The current state of OTC drug misuse and regulations to prevent abuse were also discussed.
2. Incremental Involvement in Retail Settings: The role of pharmacists in recognizing and addressing signs of misuse through a four-step approach—awareness, listening, connecting, and monitoring—was highlighted. This incremental involvement is essential for early intervention and support in safeguarding the health of youth.
3. Strengthening Education on Proper Use of OTC Drugs: While education on illegal drug abuse is widely implemented, insufficient focus on the appropriate use of OTC medications exists. Educating children, including elementary school students, about the risks of improper usage of these medications is vital. School pharmacists are urged to engage more actively in this education.

Initiatives by Shionogi Healthcare

In light of the current situation regarding OTC drug misuse, Shionogi Healthcare is committed to advancing initiatives focusing on:
  • - Educational Support: Collaborating with schools and pharmacists' associations to conduct training and offer educational materials.
  • - Ensuring Proper Access to Medications: Creating opportunities for sellers to verify the appropriate distribution of medications through initiatives such as providing disposal bins for empty medication packages.
  • - Establishing Consultation Pathways: Supporting access to hotline services through tools like the 'Tsunagu Card' to facilitate communication with healthcare providers.

They aim to enhance cooperation with school pharmacists, educational institutions, pharmacies, drugstores, and support groups to foster environments that promote the responsible use of OTC medications.

Commitment to Social Responsibility

Shionogi Healthcare’s business model is grounded in ensuring environmental sustainability, social equity, and robust governance. They focus on achieving social goals aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including health accessibility, economic growth, and reducing inequalities.
