APP Factory and Forest Management Tour: A Journey Towards Sustainability
From June 21 to 25, 2026, APP Japan organized its third Factory and Forest Management Tour in Indonesia. This event, aimed at showcasing sustainable forest resource utilization and environmental conservation, brought together participants from various sectors, including businesses, educational institutions, NGOs, and the media. Following the success of the first two tours in June and October of 2025, this initiative aimed to deepen understanding and inspire further action towards sustainability.
Key Highlights of the Tour
The program was structured around three main themes, providing a comprehensive experience of APP’s sustainable practices:
1.
From Afforestation to Paper Production
Participants visited the Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper (IKPP) factory, renowned for its massive scale. The tour covered the entire production process, from research and development of raw timber to afforestation, growth, harvesting, and the manufacture and shipping of pulp and paper products. Visitors witnessed firsthand the sustainable raw material procurement and efficient production systems that have been established.
2.
Sustainable Forest Management Initiatives
APP manages approximately 2.6 million hectares of forest in Indonesia, with about half dedicated to plantations. During the tour, attendees explored research facilities focusing on fast-growing timber species such as acacia and eucalyptus, which can be harvested within five years. This visit provided insights into securing sustainable forest resources and effective management techniques. Participants also visited the unique 'Fire Monitoring Room', a central hub for APP's comprehensive fire prevention strategies.
3.
Visiting the 'Forest Restoration Project - Let's Work on the SDGs Together!'
A visit to the local site of APP Japan’s 'Forest Restoration Project' allowed participants to observe areas previously degraded by slash-and-burn agriculture being restored. The attendees participated in a commemorative tree planting activity, experiencing the multifaceted environmental benefits of biodiversity conservation and forest regeneration, including CO₂ absorption and water source conservation. This project involves donating a portion of domestic sales to local NGOs within protected forests managed by local governments.
Collaborative Discussions
The tour engaged a diverse group of stakeholders, including students studying abroad, media representatives, and APP Japan employees, facilitating cross-sectoral discussions. This exchange of views offered a richer understanding of sustainability challenges and solutions, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing environmental issues.
Looking Ahead
This successful tour not only showcased APP's commitment to sustainable practices but also set the stage for future initiatives. Plans are already in motion for a fourth edition of the tour in 2027, promising continued engagement and learning opportunities in Indonesia.
