First Student and Tacoma Public Schools Launch Electric School Buses for a Greener Future

First Student and Tacoma Public Schools Launch Electric School Buses

In an exciting development for sustainable school transportation, First Student, a leader in the electrification of school buses, has announced a partnership with Tacoma Public Schools to introduce 14 new electric school buses. The deployment of these buses is set to significantly enhance the existing transportation solutions already provided to approximately 5,000 students by Tacoma's Student Transportation Services.

This initiative underscores First Student's commitment to innovation and sustainability, aligning well with the goals of Tacoma Public Schools to create a more environmentally friendly and safer transportation system for students. With air pollution being a pressing issue in urban areas, the introduction of electric buses not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes a cleaner and quieter ride, greatly benefiting the young commuters.

The project was made possible through funding from the Washington State Department of Ecology, which covered three of the buses, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program, which sponsored an additional eleven. These electric vehicles will not only diminish the environmental impact of school transportation but also offer financial savings as they require less maintenance and have significantly lower fueling costs compared to traditional diesel buses. Tacoma Public Schools plans to reinvest these savings into essential educational resources, thereby benefiting the students beyond just transportation.

Kevin Matthews, Head of Electrification at First Student, commented, "Our enduring partnership with Tacoma Public Schools highlights our mission to build a cleaner, healthier future for the communities we serve. As the industry leader operating the most electric buses in North America, we’re committed to our core values of caring for students. Electric buses enable us to provide a smoother, quieter ride which helps students be focused and ready to learn from the start of their day."

In a joint celebration marking this initiative, various local officials, including Tacoma Public School Board members and representatives from public utilities and environmental agencies, highlighted the long-term benefits of this project for both the students and the greater community. Attendees had the opportunity to ride in the new electric buses and experience firsthand the innovation that First Student is bringing to school transportation.

Josh Garcia, Superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We are dedicated to making choices that benefit our students and our community, and this partnership is a significant step in enhancing our transportation services while simultaneously working to reduce our carbon footprint. The electric buses align with our strategic goals of improving health and safety through cleaner air and operational efficiency with modern methods of transportation."

First Student's fleet consists of around 45,000 buses and operates an impressive 1 billion student trips each year. As the school year approaches, the new electric additions signify a strong commitment to supporting student success and fostering a safe learning environment, reinforcing the belief that investments in sustainable solutions contribute dramatically to overall educational achievement and well-being.

This collaboration between First Student and Tacoma Public Schools not only sets a precedent in sustainable education solutions but also demonstrates how innovative transportation alternatives can be integrated into existing systems to create a better future for all students. The electric school buses are not just vehicles; they symbolize a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and a safer, healthier upcoming generation.
