Celebrating 160 Years of Jozankei Onsen

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Hokkaido, Jozankei Onsen is gearing up to celebrate its 160th anniversary with a spectacular cultural event— the Summer Lantern Festival 2026. Organized by NAKED, INC., a creative company known for its innovative artistic installations, this event will run from June 1 to October 31, 2026. It promises to transform the entire onsen town into a walking journey illuminated by traditional Japanese lanterns and modern projections.

A New Vision: Jozankei's Summer Lantern Experience

This year marks a significant transformation for the festival, which previously ran for a decade under a different concept. The new format invites visitors to meander through the charming streets of Jozankei, where breathtaking light displays invite them to experience tradition in a contemporary setting. With lanterns and traditional Japanese lights (andon) adorning various locations, guests can revel in an atmosphere that marries nostalgia with modern aesthetics.

Key Lighting Spots

The festival features four main lighting installations, each capturing the unique spirit of Jozankei:

1. Ichin no Tomoshibi: Jozankei Shrine
A site of historical significance, dedicated to the founder of Jozankei Onsen, this shrine will be adorned with 100 lanterns. Visitors can enjoy dynamic projections on the shrine's facade, complemented by lighting and mist effects, forging an ethereal ambiance.

2. Ni no Tomoshibi: Iwato Kannon-do Temple
With its 90-year history, this tranquil temple will be enveloped by approximately 100 lanterns and carefully crafted lighting to enhance its architectural details, creating a serene space for reflection.

3. San no Tomoshibi: Jozan Source Park
A recreation of the natural scenery where the famous hot springs were discovered, this park will boast around 200 lanterns. Visitors can soak in the therapeutic waters while being surrounded by mesmerizing light displays.

4. Shi no Tomoshibi: Ashi no Fureai Taro Hot Springs
Located at the entrance of the onsen town, this foot bath area provides a unique opportunity to relax while experiencing exclusive light projections that harmonize with nature.
