Okayama University Hosts Mission Card Selection Event for Local SDGs Board Game

On March 26, 2026, Okayama University’s SDGs Research Group hosted a mission card selection event for its regional board game project, inviting around 30 local middle and high school students to participate. The event, held at the university's library, aimed to combine fun and learning through the creation of the Okayama version of the 'Hometown Future Co-Creation Board Game.' This board game focuses on social issues related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and similar games have been developed and implemented across Japan to educate students about these crucial topics.

The participants began by experiencing a board game based on the Kansai region, facilitated by a representative from Chugoku Bank, who is leading the development of the local game. This initial activity allowed the students to grasp the educational potential of the game while having fun and learning about local community issues. Subsequently, they broke into groups to discuss and evaluate 40 mission cards that highlight various initiatives aimed at addressing local challenges in Okayama. This collaborative effort revolved around selecting which cards should be included in the final game.

Each group assessed the mission cards based on criteria that included their personal interest and presentation potential. After ranking their selections, representatives from each group presented their top choices, explaining the reasons behind their votes, which fostered a rich discussion about the importance of community awareness and engagement. Following this, all participants cast votes in an overall selection, determining the best mission cards to be included in the board game. At the event's conclusion, students received certificates of participation, serving as a reminder of their invaluable learning experience.

In addition to the selection process, a library tour was provided for interested participants, showcasing the various facilities and specialized resources within the library. The project leading to the Okayama Hometown Future Co-Creation Board Game aims to be finished by spring 2027 and targets engagement not only for students but also for companies and local governments, expanding its impact on community education and collaboration.

Okayama University continues to commit to fostering an open and innovative academic environment, dedicated to sustainability and community involvement. The university has received recognition for its outstanding contributions towards the SDGs, including a special award during Japan's inaugural SDGs Awards.

The board game initiative is just one facet of Okayama University’s efforts to empower the next generation, encouraging them to explore and address pressing social issues through collaborative learning. As the project progresses, it promises to create a unique platform for both local students and various organizations to engage in meaningful dialogue and learning, further solidifying Okayama University's role as a pivotal research and educational institution in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project and other innovative initiatives from Okayama University.
