Kids' Love for Video Games This Holiday: A Growing Trend Among Families

What Do Kids Want This Holiday Season?

As the holiday season approaches, new research reveals that video games are at the top of many children's wish lists. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), approximately 58% of kids plan to ask for video game gifts this year. Not only are these gifts desirable, but many kids also wish for their parents to join them in gameplay. This trend highlights not just a preference for gaming among children but a desire for quality family time during the festive season.

The Rising Popularity of Video Games

In today's digital age, video games have become a cornerstone of entertainment. Recent studies indicate that the majority of kids, especially those within the age range of 5-12 (often referred to as Gen Alpha), are leaning towards video games over traditional gifts. The ESA's findings show that video games come in as a strong contender alongside money and gift cards, which are favored by 69% of children, and clothing or accessories, sought after by 63%.

Interestingly, the eagerness to play video games as a family is particularly pronounced. About 73% of children aged 5-7 express the desire to enjoy games with their parents, while 66% of those aged 8-9 and 62% of children aged 10-12 share similar desires. This indicates that the idea of shared experiences through gaming is becoming increasingly appealing.

Age-Appropriate Gaming: Key Considerations for Parents

As parents head out to shop for their children, ESA emphasizes the importance of considering the age rating and suitability of games. The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages caregivers to discuss gameplay choices. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) provides concise age ratings that guide parents on what games align with their children’s maturity levels. Notably, 89% of video games released in 2024 were rated suitable for children under 17.

These ratings help parents make informed decisions by outlining not just the appropriate age but also the themes and content a game might contain. The ESRB's system encompasses several categories, offering a brief overview of what to expect from any given title.

Managing Gameplay Experiences: Parental Controls and Conversations

In addition to checking game ratings, parents should also consider setting up parental controls on gaming platforms, ensuring a secure gaming environment for their children. Many gaming devices offer settings that allow parents to filter content, manage screen time, and prevent unauthorized purchases. Statistics reveal that about 80% of parents of kids aged 5-9 employ parental controls on their gaming devices.

Moreover, having open conversations about online gaming etiquette is essential. As many games boast online multiplayer options, discussing safety measures while interacting with others can empower children. Parents should encourage kids to treat all players with respect while understanding that they always have the option to mute, block, or report inappropriate behavior.

The Financial Aspect of Video Game Gifts

Many families are gearing up to purchase video games this holiday season, with an average budget of around $736.83 earmarked for such gifts. This financial commitment reflects not just a desire to provide entertainment but an acknowledgment of video gaming's role in family connections.

Stan Pierre-Louis, president and CEO of ESA, notes, “Video games are one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world today, with over 205 million Americans powering up games every week to have fun, relax, and connect with friends and family.” This trend underscores the potential of video games as a medium that fosters social connections and family bonding.

Throughout this holiday season, it is vital for parents to stay informed about gaming standards, use parental controls wisely, and engage with their children about their gaming experiences. By doing so, they can not only enhance their children's enjoyment of video games but also create lasting memories of shared experiences.
