e-STORAGE to Provide 420 MWh Battery Systems for Drax Group in the UK

In a significant move towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure, e-STORAGE, the energy storage division of Canadian Solar Inc., has announced a deal to supply Drax Group with battery energy storage systems totaling 420 megawatt-hours (MWh) in the United Kingdom. This contract marks a pivotal milestone in the integration of renewable sources into the UK's electrical grid, supporting the nation's ambitious decarbonization strategy.

The partnership focuses on two installations: a 60 MW / 120 MWh system in Marfleet, England, and a larger 150 MW / 300 MWh system in Neilston, Scotland. Both projects are being constructed by Apatura, a UK-based energy infrastructure company known for its expertise in large-scale battery storage. These initiatives will be integrated into Drax’s established FlexGen portfolio, which aims to solidify the company's commitment to green energy solutions. The installation process is set to begin in late 2026 at the Marfleet location, followed by the Neilston project, which is expected to commence in early 2027.

Under the terms of the agreement, e-STORAGE is responsible for delivering a comprehensive, fully integrated battery energy storage system, deploying its state-of-the-art SolBank 3.0 technology. This cutting-edge solution will come with a long-term service agreement that encompasses operational support for monitoring, preventive maintenance, and performance analytics, ensuring the system remains operational and efficient throughout its lifecycle.

Lee Dawes, Drax Group's Chief Operations Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting that it represents an important step in their strategy to diversify their energy generation capabilities. The introduction of these battery storage assets signifies Drax's inaugural venture into short-duration energy storage, crucial for maintaining a steady power supply in an increasingly renewable-driven landscape. Dawes emphasized the importance of such technology in providing reliable electricity during periods when renewable sources like wind and solar are inactive.

Highlighting the significance of the projects, Giles Hanglin, CEO of Apatura, remarked that Marfleet and Neilston are critical in establishing a flexible and resilient energy network.
