Shonan Kamakura Ofunakien's New Product Launch
On July 23, 2025, the renowned
Shonan Kamakura Ofunakien will introduce a new item to its menu:
Engawa and Ebi Pressed Sushi. \(This new offering upholds the tradition that began back in the Meiji era, as the brand carries forth the craftsmanship behind its famed
Ajimeshi Pressed Sushi that has been a beloved staple for over a century.\)
Celebrating over 120 years of railway history and culinary excellence, Ofunakien was established in 1898 at the
Ofuna Station in Kanagawa Prefecture. In the following year, the founding figure,
Shuzou Tominaka, was encouraged by a notable government official, Kiyotaka Kuroda, to innovate by launching Japan’s first-ever sandwich as a railway bento. This inventive spirit paved the way for the creation of their signature pressed sushi,
Ajimeshi, originating in 1913.
The
Engawa and Ebi Pressed Sushi features a delectable combination of the sweet, fatty texture of
Engawa (flounder fin) along with the refreshing flavor of vinegar-marinated
Ebi (shrimp). This union not only results in an exquisite taste but also visually pleases with its harmonious colors. Customers will be able to savor the sushi without the need to cut or squash the rice, as the product retains the integrity of each grain - a treatment that reflects their respect for traditional preparation methods that mix techniques from both Kanto and Kansai regions.
