Innovative Collaboration between CLG and INA Achieves Sustainable Aviation Fuel Milestone

In a groundbreaking development, Chevron Lummus Global (CLG) has successfully completed a commercial test, demonstrating its innovative technology in producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biogenic feedstocks at INA Group's Rijeka Refinery located in Croatia. This achievement represents the refinery's inaugural production of SAF, alongside hydrotreated vegetable oil renewable diesel, showcasing how existing facilities can be repurposed to foster renewable fuel production.

The operation, conducted at CLG's licensed hydrocracking unit, involved the co-processing of 1,000 tonnes of palm oil mill effluent (POME) mixed with fossil feedstocks. The meticulous process was overseen and certified by Bureau Veritas d.o.o., adhering to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standards for sustainable biofuels. This certification reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices in the energy sector.

Arun Arora, Chief Technology Officer of Chevron Lummus Global, emphasized the significance of this project. He noted that the successful test not only highlights the versatility of CLG's technology but also illustrates its capability to integrate into existing infrastructures, allowing for a wide array of feedstocks to be co-processed for clean fuel production. Prior to the test, CLG and INA engaged in extensive collaboration to address the unique challenges associated with processing the new feedstock type, which possesses specific physical and chemical properties. This included enhancing the hydrocracking and vacuum distillation units and implementing controlled procedures to manage the biogenic feedstock within existing operational frameworks. INA is not stopping here; the company plans to complete its preparations and aim for a continuous market supply of SAF by the year 2029.
