A New Era for Equine Veterinary Care in Normandy
The École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort (EnvA) has proudly inaugurated its new Equine University Hospital Center (Chuv-Eq) located at the International Horse Campus in Normandy. This launch represents a significant milestone in enhancing equine health services, research, and training. With a strategic partnership involving EnvA, the Normandy region, and the Calvados department, this ambitious project combines the expertise of the renowned CIRALE (Center for Imaging and Research on Locomotive Disorders in Equines) with new dedicated facilities for internal medicine, surgery, emergency care, and intensive care.
"It made sense to consolidate equine health activities in one location, considering Normandy’s status as a leading region for horses in France. The new facilities offer top-tier clinical expertise, which bolsters our educational and research missions," explains Fabrice Audigé, director of Chuv-Eq.
Cutting-Edge Infrastructure
The Chuv-Eq boasts state-of-the-art imaging technologies such as MRI, CT scans, and scintigraphy, alongside specialized sectors designed for infectious animal isolation, locomotor rehabilitation (including aquatic therapy), and chemotherapy. Céline Mespoulhès, head of the medicine-surgery sector, noted, "The immediate proximity of these resources ensures optimal care and expedites diagnostics and treatments, especially in surgery."
The CIRALE’s locomotion department continues to excel in diagnosing locomotor disorders and rehabilitating horses through personalized programs and unique infrastructures found nowhere else in Europe.
Opportunities for Students and Research
The launch of Chuv-Eq also marks a transformative moment for veterinary education. All fifth-year students from EnvA will now partake in immersive training sessions at the facility, fostering valuable hands-on experience. Moreover, the center opens new avenues for scientific collaboration, especially with the University of Caen.
A Boon for the Equine Industry
Beyond its educational and research missions, the Chuv-Eq caters to the needs of the French and international equine sectors. Approximately 10% of the horses treated at the facility are from other European nations. With the establishment of this exceptional center, Normandy is positioning itself as a hub of excellence for equine health, benefiting horses, professionals, and the broader equine community.
