Revolutionizing Construction: The Innovative KIBLO Wooden Unit Building Unveiled

KIBLO: A New Era in Wooden Unit Construction

Sumitomo Forestry has recently unveiled a groundbreaking wooden unit building concept named KIBLO, aimed at tackling pressing issues in the construction industry, including labor shortages and environmental sustainability. This innovative building model is designed to enhance resource circularity while significantly reducing construction time.

Addressing Key Issues in Construction

In recent years, the construction industry has faced various challenges, notably the need for a low-carbon society. This involves a shift towards wooden structures, as well as increasing the longevity of buildings and the recycling of materials. Alongside dwindling workforce numbers and an aging labor demographic, this crisis has intensified the urgency for efficient construction practices. Especially in small-scale commercial construction, a reliable management system is essential, highlighting the need for effective workforce and operational strategies.

In response, Sumitomo Forestry has commenced the development of the KIBLO wooden unit, combining the natural advantages of timber with the efficiency of modular building techniques.

Features of KIBLO

The KIBLO design incorporates unique features that set it apart from traditional construction methods. Each unit, measuring approximately 10 square meters, can be manufactured in a factory and then transported to the construction site for assembly. The units can be connected both lengthwise and widthwise, creating spacious interiors with a ceiling height of 2,400mm and an effective width of approximately 4,680mm. This is made possible by the innovative narrow-width bearing wall, which provides robust structural support.

Moreover, KIBLO units are designed for easy disassembly and reassembly, thanks to specialized connectors that facilitate quick transitions from one site to another.

Creating Value Through Circular Architecture

One of KIBLO's main advantages lies in its ability to extend the lifecycle of buildings. Rather than being demolished after their initial use, KIBLO units can be relocated and repurposed, reducing waste and environmental impact. This not only supports carbon retention through the use of timber but also promotes the circular economy by optimizing resources.

In addition, KIBLO can serve as temporary structures during emergencies, which can later be transformed for various uses once the initial purpose has been fulfilled.

Time and Cost Efficiency

The construction process is significantly accelerated as KIBLO units are produced in tandem with foundation work at the site. This allows for a substantial reduction in onsite labor since the necessary units arrive ready for installation. For instance, a model with an approximate area of 80 square meters may see its building time halved when comparing KIBLO to traditional methods. Moreover, producing units in a controlled factory environment helps ensure consistent quality.

Cost reduction is another considerable benefit, as utilizing commonly available timber for the KIBLO construction minimizes dependency on specific materials, streamlining procurement processes.

Comfortable Indoor Environments

Despite being designed for relocation, KIBLO also emphasizes creating a comfortable living and working environment. The units achieve thermal insulation performance equivalent to the highest standards, ensuring that users experience the well-being associated with wooden interiors.

KIBLO's Role in GREEN×EXPO 2027

KIBLO is set to make its debut at the upcoming GREEN×EXPO 2027, where it will serve as a back-office facility in the Sumitomo Forestry Pavilion,
