Japan Post and T2 Innovate Automated Freight Transportation Between Kanto and Kyushu

Japan Post Partners with T2 for Automation in Freight Transport



In an exciting development for logistics in Japan, Japan Post Co., Ltd. and T2 Co., Ltd. have embarked on a groundbreaking demonstration project to utilize autonomous trucks for relay transport between the Kanto and Kyushu regions. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and solve the growing problem of driver shortages in the industry while paving the way for the future of automated logistics.

The Demonstration Project


The demonstration took place on a segment of the expressway connecting Kanto and Kansai. It tested T2's autonomous trucks under a specific transport model called 'relay transport'. This method involves dividing the long-distance journey among multiple truck drivers, and in this case, it allows for the integration of automated and manual driving transitions at designated hubs.

T2 aims to introduce Level 4 autonomous trucks after 2027, which is a fully automated operation under specific conditions without human intervention. Japan Post is helping to spearhead this transition by actively participating in T2's commercial operation, launched with Level 2 trucks since July 2025. As part of the effort, they are collaborating with other logistics companies, such as Seino Transportation Co., Ltd.

The Operational Framework


In this project, Japan Post designated the necessary logistics routes, handled the assignment of freight, and managed truck scheduling. Meanwhile, T2 oversaw overall project management and vehicle procurement. The operation tested an approximately 1,150 km journey from Kanagawa to Kumamoto, utilizing Level 2 autonomous driving for roughly 500 km between the Ayase Smart IC and Kobe West IC on the expressway. The return segment covered about 1,090 km back to Kanagawa.

Key Routes and Hubs


The trial also involved stops at T2’s 'Transgate Kobe West', a facility established in 2023 that acts as a switching point for automated and manual driving. Here, the demonstration included the transfer of containers between T2's autonomous trucks and Japan Post's vehicles, showcasing the seamless integration necessary for smooth operations in a mixed driving environment. The tests were conducted between May 11 and May 13, further validating the operational efficiency of using T2's autonomous trucks in Japan’s logistics network.

Future Prospects


The success of this demonstration is a testament to the practical application of autonomous driving technology in real-world logistics. Both companies intend to pursue ongoing efforts to utilize autonomous trucks in relay transport. Should the operational effectiveness meet expectations, discussions will commence around regular operation services. This illustrates a significant step towards developing the necessary infrastructure and operational protocols for Level 4 autonomous vehicles, an endeavor that reflects broader trends in automotive technology and logistics.

The innovative project not only addresses the urgent issue of driver shortages but also exemplifies how technology can boost productivity in the logistics industry.
