Chris Morton Takes Charge at the American Land Title Association

On June 10, 2025, the American Land Title Association (ALTA) made a significant announcement: Chris Morton has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He succeeds Diane Tomb, who has held the position for the past six years. This leadership change marks an exciting new chapter for ALTA as it navigates the future of the title insurance industry.

Morton is not new to the organization; he has been a pivotal figure in ALTA, previously serving as the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Chief Advocacy Officer. With over 25 years of experience in the financial services sector, Morton has accumulated vast knowledge and expertise that will benefit the organization tremendously. His previous roles have positioned him as a key player in shaping ALTA's public policy and advocating for the title insurance industry at the federal level.

Richard Welshons MTP, NTP, President of ALTA, emphasized the importance of Morton's appointment, stating, "As the leader of our advocacy efforts, Chris Morton has been the public voice of our industry in Washington. He brings the right mix of experience, vision, and steady leadership to guide ALTA. We thank Diane Tomb for her years of service and wish her well in future endeavors."

Under Morton's guidance, ALTA is expected to continue its commitment to protecting homebuyers and their property rights—an essential aspect of their mission. His extensive work with industry partners to advance the title insurance role highlights his dedication to promoting best practices and legislative advocacy within the sector.

In Morton's words, “I am humbled by the industry's faith and trust in me. Our leadership remains deeply committed to continuing ALTA's legacy of promoting the title industry and the tens of thousands of title professionals across the country. These dedicated individuals work every day to protect the American Dream of homeownership in their communities.” This quote encapsulates his vision for the organization as they tackle pressing challenges like housing supply and affordability.

ALTA has a history of adapting to changes in the housing market, and there is confidence that Morton’s leadership will enhance their direction moving forward. David Townsend MTP, NTP, ALTA’s president-elect, expressed his optimism, stating, “Our focus remains on executing our core mission, supporting our members, and continuing to build an association that reflects our values. Chris has demonstrated success in numerous roles over his career, and we are confident he will build on the great work of the association.”

Established in 1907, the American Land Title Association is the national trade association representing over 6,000 title insurance companies, title and settlement agents, independent abstracters, title searchers, and real estate attorneys, most of which are small businesses. The organization serves as a critical voice in the real estate transaction process, ensuring that consumers are protected under the law.
