The Grains of Truth 2024 report, launched by EAT and GlobeScan, has unveiled a complex landscape regarding the global shift towards plant-based diets. Despite a growing interest, significant barriers remain. While 68% of participants express a desire to increase their consumption of plant-based foods, only 20% actively include these foods in their diet regularly. This represents a decline from 23% in the previous year, emphasizing the obstacles impeding this dietary transition.

The study, which collated feedback from over 30,000 consumers in 31 different markets, explored economic factors and personal preferences that shape food choices. Among the striking findings, a staggering 42% of respondents highlighted price as the major barrier to embracing plant-based options. Additionally, 35% cited taste as a deterrent, particularly in North America and Europe where affordability issues are compelling. In contrast, consumers in the Asia-Pacific region are more concerned about the nutritional value of plant-based foods.

Generational differences also surfaced in the insights. Millennials, especially those with children, show the most enthusiasm for plant-based eating. However, they also face significant challenges concerning affordability and convenience. On the other hand, Baby Boomers tend to prioritize healthy eating but remain skeptical primarily due to taste and texture concerns.

The findings illuminate a potential path for encouraging a dietary shift towards sustainability. Interestingly, 69% of participants believe that reducing meat consumption can benefit global health, with improved health outcomes being the principal motivation. Paradoxically, financial considerations have recently overtaken animal welfare as the key reason for dietary changes, reflecting increased economic pressures.

Dr. Gunhild Stordalen, Co-founder and Executive Chair of EAT, remarked on the critical need for bold actions to foster a supportive food environment. She stated, “This report highlights the urgency for decisive actions. We must strive for a food system where plant-based diets are not merely an option, but a practical and attractive reality for all.”

Chris Coulter, CEO of GlobeScan, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This is a pivotal moment in our pursuit of healthier diets. Consumers show eagerness for change; however, barriers such as cost, trust, flavor, and convenience hinder progress. Collaboration among governments, food producers, and consumers can help surmount these challenges.”

The report stresses that while the potential for dietary change is significant, immediate actions are necessary to address these hurdles. Suggestions include financial incentives, innovation to enhance plant-based food quality, and widespread education on the benefits of these diets. Through thoughtful intervention, it is feasible to establish a nutritious, sustainable, and equitable food system.
